VIDEO: Mililani’s marvelous back-to-back OIA title night

By Paul Honda on October 17, 2019

It took, very possibly, the best and toughest efforts by all of the Mililani Trojans to rally past Moanalua 15-25, 28-26, 25-13, 21-25, 15-10 in the final of the OIA Division I girls volleyball playoffs on Wednesday night at Na Menehune gym. Falanika Danielson was tremendous again, pounding 24 kills and scoring four of her team’s final six points in the fifth set. She had 21 kills in a semifinal win over Kahuku on Monday, and on Wednesday, she revealed […]

Sinus infection, asthma can’t stop Falanika Danielson as Mililani defends OIA title

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2019

There was no obvious sign that Falanika Danielson was woozy. Or struggling with sinus infection. Or asthma. The powerful outside hitter simply played through and delivered once again for No. 4-ranked Mililani. The senior crushed 24 kills, adding a block along the way, as the Lady Trojans defended their OIA Division I crown with a resounding 15-25, 28-26, 25-13, 21-25, 15-10 win over No. 5 Moanalua in the home gym of Na Menehune on Wednesday night. Danielson was clutch with […]

Pearl City’s middles rock for Chargers’ first title in 22 years

By Nick Abramo on October 16, 2019

It was one big hit after another from high over the middle of the net from the Pearl City attack. And lots of blocks, too. Two Chargers middles provided the thrust to give the school its first OIA girls volleyball championship since 1997 on Wednedsay night with a 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 sweep of Kalani at the Moanalua gym. Unlike the title 22 years ago, this one came in Division II. It was a thrilling experience for the girls in purple […]

VIDEO: Coach and player interviews from the OIA volleyball semifinals

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2019

With No. 6 Kahuku ahead 20-14 in the fourth set, Falanika Danielson helped No. 4 Mililani rally, scoring her team’s last five points in a four-set victory in the OIA Division I semifinals at Moanalua gym. The fourth-ranked Mililani Trojans were on the ropes, but rallied in the fourth set to oust No. 6 Kahuku in the semifinal round of the OIA girls volleyball playoffs. Coach Val Crabbe chatted after the match at Moanalua gym. No. 6 Kahuku was on […]

No. 4 Mililani is clutch down the stretch to advance to OIA final

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2019

The tide had turned and the Mililani Trojans were awash in deep waters. Up 2-0 against dangerous Kahuku, the Lady Trojans were wiped out in game three. Kahuku led 20-14 in the fourth set — a combined 44-30 edge since the end of the second game — and looked omnipotent. Every ball was heavy. Every swing seemed like a home run. But the Lady Trojans withstood the surge. With a sizable and loud backing led by its football team, No. […]

No. 5 Moanalua rides senior leadership to sweep No. 9 Kapolei

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2019

Moanalua, as junior Tayli Ikenaga says, loves to be the underdog. Na Menehune love to be the smaller team. The younger team. The team that, at least on paper, shouldn’t be one of the best teams in one of the country’s biggest leagues. But they keep doing this winning thing. With 16 kills from senior Tradie DeBina-Bautista and 13 from Ikenaga — who looks fully recovered from a mid-season foot injury — No. 6-ranked Moanalua swept No. 9 Kapolei 25-18, […]

Despite OIA semifinal loss, No. 6 Kahuku making big strides

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2019

The Lady Raiders of Kahuku are better now. Happy, not quite. The long ride home from Moanalua gym after a four-set semifinal loss to unbeaten Mililani won’t ease the pain, but No. 6 Kahuku is not the same team it was at midseason. Coach Tuli Tevaga can recall a fairly frustrating night at Moanalua, when her team was still finding chemistry. This time, down 2-1, Kahuku led No. 4 Mililani 20-14 in the fourth set. The match felt destined to […]
