Punahou withstood a powerful attack by Kahuku for a 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 25-21 win in the opening round of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships at Hemmeter Fieldhouse on Monday. Punahou seniors Chloe Kaahanui and outside hitter Kaia Dunford chatted after the match.

Division II play begins Wednesday with the quarterfinals in both divisions on Thursday. ILH champion Damien is the top seed in Division II in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships beginning Wednesday. The Monarchs will try to give the ILH its fifth consecutive state title in D-II girls volleyball.
