It wasn’t a smooth ride, but Coach Chris Blake and the Kamehameha Warriors were equipped for the duration. The Warriors rose out of the ILH playoffs to upend regular-season winner Punahou for the league crown. Then Kamehameha worked through the state tournament, rallying to beat Punahou in four sets for the title. This is Kamehameha’s 22nd girls volleyball state championship, and 10th under Blake, who has guided the program to the state finals for 17 years in a row.

Coach Don Faumuina‘s final season is also Damien’s first as a state champion. The Lady Monarchs swept previously unbeaten Waimea 25-19, 25-11, 25-14 for the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball Division II state championship on Saturday night at Blaisdell Arena.

After drilling 22 kills with 11 digs in the Division I final of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships on Saturday night at Blaisdell Arena, Kamehameha’a Keonilei Akana was picked as the tournament’s most outstanding player. Punahou played all its cards so well. After losing in the ILH final, at home, swept by Kamehameha, the Buffanblu tinkered and adjusted. They brought Jaclyn Matias to the forefront, sharing setting duties with Chloe Kaahanui. Grace Fiaseu stepped up. Madisyn Beirne and Kaia Dunford, their seniors, continued to pound away.
