HHSAA proposal to DOH: football, girls volleyball in March

The next step for high school sports in Hawaii requires patience. More patience. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the high school sports calendar is in the decisive hands of the Department of Health. The proposal from the Hawaii High School Athletic Association divides the sports season, from January to May, into two segments. There is no such thing as just another ILH volleyball match. On this date in 2014, No. 1 Kamehameha swept Iolani 25-21, 25-23 at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium to improve to 8-0. Kealani Browne, Tiyana Hallums and Kayla Afoa led the way for the Warriors, but they were far from the only stars on the hill that night. Sometimes, home is on the volleyball court, which may explain why Leslie Akeo, Taylor Akana and Allie Yamashiro turned into all-time greats in the faraway Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference. The three Kamehameha graduates were honored as members of the MAAC’s 40th Anniversary women’s volleyball team. Akeo and Akana played at Siena. MaxPreps names Kamehameha’s Devin Kahahawai to Preseason All-American 2nd team

Devin Kahahawai endeared herself to her older teammates as a freshman. Then, as a sophomore in 2019, Kahahawai became a force. The 6-foot-1 Kamehameha volleyball player was versatile enough to stuff the net defensively while hammering spikes from either side.
