By Jerry Campany on November 26, 2016

TThe ILH Division I girls basketball season started in earnest on Saturday night. Punahou started the night with a balanced attack to win its ILH opener over rival Kamehameha 56-45. Kamaile Kandiah and Tanisha Elbourne each scored 13 points for Punahou with Abigail Aplaca and Elle Uyeda each chipping in 11. The Buffanblu only had four players score, but each of them hit at least one shot from long range. Mikiala Maio paced the Warriors with 19 points and Kiana […]

‘Tis the season for hoops hysteria

By Paul Honda on November 24, 2016

I‘m grateful for many things. One is covering sports for eight years in a place that has, as my old editor Bobby Command (at West Hawaii Today) would say, “provincial” qualities. Honokaa vs. Kohala basketball in the 1990s drew packed gyms for boys and girls games. Cousins versus cousins, going back generations. Keone Emeliano, Kalei Emeliano, Travis Van Zandt, Kihei Kapeliela, Benny Alcoran launching 3-point bombs all night for Kohala. Jayme Carvalho, Taich Alip, Kaulana Noa holding down the fort […]

Molina sinks halfcourt shot for Wazzu

By Paul Honda on November 19, 2016

Former Konawaena girls basketball standout Chanelle Molina is already making an impact for Washington State. Molina, a former all-state player of the year, banked in a halfcourt shot before the half against Oklahoma State on Sunday. The video is highlighted on the Pac-12 Conference website. OSU won the game 79-72 in Pullman, handing the Cougars their first loss after three wins. Molina scored a season-high 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting with one rebound and three assists in 31 minutes. Her […]

Celena Jane Molina makes it official at WSU

By Paul Honda on November 10, 2016

Konawaena senior Celena Jane Molina followed through on her commitment, signing a letter of intent to play basketball at Washington State. Molina, a three-time Fab 15, all-state forward for the Wildcats, just completed her volleyball season. She is one of the state’s top players in volleyball, but isn’t planning to play that sport for the Cougars. At least, not yet. Her older sister, former all-state player of the year Chanelle Molina, just began her freshman year at Washington State. Lia […]

Celena Molina commits to Washington State

By Paul Honda on October 27, 2016

Celena Jane Molina, Konawaena’s basketball and volleyball standout, has orally committed to Washington State. The 5-foot-9 senior is a three-time Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball All-State Fab 15 selection and two-time state champion. She will play basketball for the Cougars, who recruited her older sister, recent graduate Chanelle Molina. Youngest sister Cherilyn Molina, an all-state junior guard who also plays volleyball, has a scholarship offer from Washington State, as well. Celena Jane Molina can sign her letter of intent on Nov. 9. […]

Roosevelt’s Higa steps down as hoops coach

By Nick Abramo on September 9, 2016

Hinano Higa stepped down as the Roosevelt girls basketball coach, Rough Riders athletic director John Chung confirmed Thursday. “She just felt like it was time to step away,” Chung wrote via text message. “She actually talked to me about it a couple of years ago.” And so it goes with quality head coaches. Sometimes they can’t leave to tend to other obligations — or just to take a break from the grind — even if they want to. Higa was […]

Lagat-Ramos takes over Kaiser girls hoops

By Jerry Campany on July 12, 2016

Hoops Artistry founder Brianna Lagat-Ramos accepted the position of head coach for the varsity girls basketball team for Kaiser for the upcoming year. Lagat-Ramos has been an assistant coach at Kalani and Moanalua and handled the JV team for Moanalua. The UH-Manoa graduate takes over for Simon Bitanga, who held the post for the past decade but was the subject of an investigation last year. Kaiser made the state tournament three straight years under Bitanga (2011-2013) and reached the state […]

Awa: Chanelle Molina led by example

By Paul Honda on June 7, 2016

Bobbie Awa isn’t big on hyperbole. However, the longtime, seven-time state-championship winning girls basketball coach will chat joyfully about her players, especially those who led. One of them is Chanelle Molina, who helped Konawaena capture its second girls basketball state title in as many years. Molina was inducted into the Enterprise Hawaii Hall of Honor on Sunday. “It was great coaching Chanelle for four years,” Awa said. “She’s such a good student of the game. She loves to learn. She […]
