HAWAII GROWN: WSU’s Molina tears ACL

By Hawaii Prep World on January 17, 2017

Washington State freshman Chanelle Molina will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL suffered in last Friday’s 68-49 loss to No. 18 Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. The Konawaena alumna was injured in the second half after another freshman from Hawaii, Cameron Fernandez, suffered a scary head injury in the first half. “Friday the 13th was absolutely the horriblest, worst day of our lives I think,” Washington State coach June Daugherty said during Tuesday’s press conference. Molina […]

OIA girls basketball playoffs start Friday

By Hawaii Prep World on January 17, 2017

The 2017 OIA girls basketball playoffs begin Friday with six games — four in Division I and two in Division II. Kaimuki (9-1) earned the tiebreaker over Farrington (9-1) for the No. 1 seed out of the East due to its head-to-head win while Leilehua (9-1) is the top team out of the West finishing one game ahead of three 8-2 teams — Mililani, Nanakuli and Radford. The Trojans earned the second first-round bye out of that group. Kalani (7-3) is the […]

Dialing long distance: Kaimuki’s launching pad

By Paul Honda on January 13, 2017

They are who they thought they were. The rest of the OIA, and the state, knows the Kaimuki Bulldogs now. A few months ago, nobody outside of longtime girls basketball coach Mona Fa‘asoa, her staff, players and the most tightly-knit insiders knew what this season’s Bulldogs were capable of. Oh, there was hope. Victoria Kintz, the senior returnee with eye-popping handles, scoring ability and a basketball IQ among the elite. (And a scholarship to Holy Names University.) A few more […]

‘Iolani’s ‘Pop’ move and Maryknoll’s happiness

By Paul Honda on January 13, 2017

To the unsuspecting spectator entering Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium at Maryknoll School on Thursday evening, a showdown of immense magnitude was in the making. In reality, not really. Fourth-ranked ‘Iolani had nothing to gain or lose in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball standings. Top-ranked Maryknoll had plenty of incentive: win and clinch at least a tie for the regular-season title — which brings an automatic state-tourney berth. The end result: Maryknoll turned a two-point game in the third […]

Year 1: Kahuku’s Wily fueled by fundamentals

By Paul Honda on January 12, 2017

It wasn’t so long ago, really, when Latoya Wily was Kahuku’s unstoppable force in the paint. At 6 feet tall with plenty of muscle, the nimble-footed Wily was relentless on both ends of the court. Great footwork in the low post, always working the angles and using her mind as much as her athleticism to get position and hit buckets, draw fouls and make life miserable for defenders. In the spring of 2004 — back when girls basketball was played […]

Lady Spartans rule the throne — for now

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2017

The Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 came out Monday, always another opportunity to examine and nit-pick over something that has absolutely no bearing on anything substantial. Anything close? No, just a couple of arguments: Konawaena should not move up ahead of ‘Iolani and Kamehameha by default, and why I still have Kamehameha-Maui on my ballot. Here’s how coaches and media voted. Star-Advertiser Top 10 Jan. 9, 2016 1. Maryknoll (11) 110 2. Konawaena 97 3. Lahainaluna 82 4. ‘Iolani 76 […]

HAWAII GROWN: Molina collects national honor

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2017

In addition to a second Pac-12 Conference freshman of the week honor in as many weeks, former Konawaena Wildcat Chanelle Molina was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) freshman of the week today. Molina was already making headlines with a huge 33-point, five-rebound, seven-assist performance in Washington State’s 82-73 upset of then-No. 9 UCLA on Friday. Against USC on Sunday, the three-time Star-Advertiser all-state player of the year scored 16 points to lead the Cougars in a 74-57 win. […]

Molina’s 33 lifts Wazzu to upset of #9 UCLA

By Paul Honda on January 7, 2017

Just days after the Pac-12 Conference named her freshman of the week, former Konawaena standout Chanelle Molina took it one giant step further. The three-time all-state player of the year scored 33 points to power Washington State over No. 9 UCLA, 82-73, in Pullman, Wash. Molina tied the freshman scoring mark set by another former Konawaena Wildcat, Lia Galdeira. The victory on Friday night quickly made headlines near and far for Molina and the Cougars, from the Big Island’s Hawaii […]
