Hoopbook: Amari Westmoreland-Vendiola averaging 26/7 in Kahuku’s 4-0 start

By Paul Honda on January 20, 2022

The All-State, All-ILH (Open, Division I/II), All-OIA (Open, D-I, D-II) football package has consumed the life of this old pupule sportswriter for some time. It is absolutely zany. Our editors are already up to their necks with the regular work load, and this project puts us all in “Tilt” mode. It is one step beyond, for sure. But it is almost behind us now, which means there’s time for roundball. So there is much to say about boys and girls […]

By Paul Honda on January 17, 2022

‘Iolani collected nine of 12 first-place votes to remain atop the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 on Monday. The Raiders won their ILH regular-season opener against Punahou, 54-47. ‘Iolani travels for a battle with No. 4 Kamehameha on Tuesday. Konawaena collected the remaining three first-place ballots and remained at No. 2. The Wildcats got a key road win at previously unbeaten Waiakea over the weekend, 47-32. Punahou’s strong start in ILH play — wins over Maryknoll and Kamehameha — inspired […]

Hoopbook: Kapolei’s gritty girls; ILH boys finally tip off

By Paul Honda on January 11, 2022

ILH girls basketball games took a bit of break recently with the upsurge of positive COVID-19 tests in the islands. It was enough to wipe out most of the first round-robin in the ILH schedule. So, instead of the four Division I teams — ‘Iolani, Kamehameha, Mid-Pacific and Punahou — playing a partial go-round, the first go-round has been scrapped. So, instead of Kamehameha and ‘Iolani playing on Tuesday night, the game has been cancelled. Kamehameha’s previous ILH games with […]

‘Iolani, Konawaena remain 1-2 in Girls Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on January 10, 2022

A relatively quiet week in prep hoops means ‘Iolani is still prominently atop the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. The Raiders collected eight out of 11 first-place votes in Monday’s coaches and media tally. The Raiders will battle Kamehameha on Tuesday in the ILH regular-season opener for both teams. Konawaena garnered three first-place votes. The Wildcats will host Honokaa on Tuesday. Maryknoll, which will visit Punahou on Tuesday, is No. 3. Upstart Maui is 4-0 in MIL play and is […]

Speedy Roosevelt is 4-0 after 44-22 rout of Farrington

By Paul Honda on January 6, 2022

In a wide open OIA girls basketball race, Roosevelt has the motor to outrun, maybe, every foe. Coach Joe Cho’s squad used a stifling fullcourt press to overwhelm Farrington on Wednesday night, 44-22, at the Rough Riders’ gym. It was still close, 15-8, at the half, before Roosevelt used the press for a 20-3 third-quarter run. The on-ball pressure was constant, setting up a string of steals by freshman Makalah Richardson (14 points) on long passes by the Lady Governors. […]

‘Iolani a near unanimous No. 1, Radford enters Girls Basketball Top 10

By Paul Honda on January 3, 2022

‘Iolani is an outright No. 1 again in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 on Monday. The Raiders (3-2) have not played since Dec. 20, when they overwhelmed Campbell, 59-27. With the cancellation of two preseason games and the postponement of the ILH regular season for one week, ‘Iolani’s next game is on Jan. 11 against Kamehameha. Konawaena is No. 2 and will host Honokaa on Tuesday in its BIIF opener. Maryknoll, Maui and Kamehameha fill out the top five. […]

Kaimuki drops out of OIA girls basketball schedule

By Paul Honda on January 1, 2022

After three forfeitures to begin the OIA regular season, Kaimuki’s girls basketball team is off the league schedule. The recent revision on Dec. 30 shows no remaining games for the Bulldogs. They forfeited games against Moanalua (Dec. 23), Kalani (Dec. 28) and Kahuku (Dec. 30). Lack of players has hindered the program in recent seasons. This year, the program was down to four players after one student-athlete opted to play soccer instead. Kaimuki isn’t the only girls basketball program struggling […]
