Heimuli, Mailou to sign with Paris JC

By Paul Honda on March 3, 2017

All-State Fab 15 selection Molimau Heimuli and teammate Chantal Mailou led Farrington to an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls basketball championship last month. In a few more months, Heimuli and Mailou will be en route to Paris Junior College in Texas to continue their playing careers. Heimuli, a 5-foot-11 guard/forward, was voted No. 4 in the Star-Advertiser All-State Fab 15 by coaches and media. Versatility across the court and power in the paint make Heimuli an elite prospect. Coaches […]

Girls hoops All-Defense, Most Improved

By Paul Honda on February 27, 2017

There’s a list a certain pupule writer is composing that, in terms of importance, breaks apart like this — if was a pie chart: 60 percent, All-Defensive Team; 39 percent, most improved player; and 1 percent, roughly 200 girls basketball players rated in my latest sumo-rankings style groupings. So the order of priority is simple enough. By vote via coaches and media, here’s the 2017 All-Defensive team in girls basketball, in ranked order: ALL-DEFENSE 1. Celena Jane Molina, Konawaena 2. […]

By Paul Honda on February 25, 2017

Three years ago, Mona Fa‘asoa was ready to call it a career after more than a decade as Kaimuki’s esteemed girls basketball coach. The circle of supporters at Kaimuki pulled her back in, and the results were astounding. Friday morning, Kaimuki announced vacancies for the girls basketball and boys soccer head coaching […]

Final girls hoops ballot in year of young guns

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2017

Anti-climatic, sure. Polls at the high school level are more like whipped cream than anything nutritious. But for voters, there are mini dilemmas. Konawaena’s win over Maryknoll in a thriller of a state-championship game makes the top spot on a ballot easy to pick. But what about the likes of ‘Iolani, which lost to Kamehameha, a state semifinalist, by just three points in an ILH playoff game. And ‘Iolani had only seven players in uniform. What about Mililani, which won […]

Boost from alums helped MPI to state title

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2017

Two weeks before the state championships, Sherice Ajifu took a stark look at her unbeaten Mid-Pacific Owls. They had pulled out a 43-37 win over St. Francis to complete the ILH Division II girls basketball season. After rolling over D-III competition by margins of 54, 49, 55 and 39 points, and league D-II foes by 16, 12, 14, 25, 28 and 35 points, the six-point win over St. Francis was jarring. It was the Owls’ first ILH girls basketball title […]
