Lack of support led Ajifu to resign at Mid-Pacific

By Paul Honda on December 14, 2017

Sherice Ajifu says there was no choice. The Mid-Pacific girls basketball coach, who led the Owls to the Division II state championship last season, resigned on Sunday after several days of crisis within the program. It came down, she said, to “core values.” “I don’t want to put anybody on a hot seat, but I’ll say this: we decided to resign due to a lack of administrative support,” Ajifu said Thursday night. “It has nothing to do with a kid. […]

Kahuku, Roosevelt hoopsters growing up quickly

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2017

Kahuku and Roosevelt had appeal for basketball fans long before there was anything resembling the unusual. Kahuku’s 42-37 overtime win in Roosevelt’s gym was every bit as tantalizing as imaginable for two fairly young teams in the hunt for an Oahu Interscholastic Association championship. It has been three games since coach Chad Kaihe resigned after an incident with a parent in the parking lot at Sacred Hearts Academy following a tournament game. That situation remains in the no-comment zone for […]

Despite injuries, Warriors overcome Raiders

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2017

The timing and weirdness of fluke injuries and real on-court injuries doesn’t seem to faze Joseph Cho, but his Warriors swear by the healing powers of the “Maunawili Man.” The Kamehameha girls basketball coach keeps rolling with the ups and downs, and for the No. 2-ranked Warriors, the season has been almost entirely plus, plus, plus so far. A 44-32 win over No. 5 ‘Iolani on the road on Tuesday night had plenty to do with the surging power of […]

Centennial embraces old school, keeps winning

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2017

In a world where high school coaches are hired and fired in the blink of an eye, or walk away in the midst of crisis, sometimes the process is forgotten. Not so at Centennial High School in Las Vegas, where Karen Weitz is in her 24th season as head coach of the girls basketball program. The Bulldogs swept through the ‘Iolani Classic in their first visit to the islands, toppling Oregon 6A defending champion Southridge 53-43 in the final on […]

Roosevelt hoops coach steps down after incident

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2017

Roosevelt girls basketball coach Chad Kaihe has resigned, athletic director John Chung confirmed Monday. Kaihe was in his second season as head coach. The former Nanakuli junior varsity coach was hired after longtime coach Hinano Higa stepped down before the 2016-17 season. Roosevelt is 1-1 in Oahu Interscholastic Association regular-season play after a forfeit by Kailua and a 51-49 loss to Kaiser. Two weeks ago, Roosevelt played in the Sacred Hearts Invitational preseason tournament. After the team’s last game, a […]

Espinas, Falcons stifle McKinley

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2017

Kaylie Espinas scored all 12 of her points in the first half and Kalani locked down defensively in the second half for a 38-33 win over McKinley on Monday night at McKinley Student Council Gymnasium. Logan Luke and Heidi Kishiba added seven points each, and Alayna Akiona scored six key points, all in the second half, for the Lady Falcons. Kalani improved to 2-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East (5-6 overall) with the scrappy win. “It’s an ugly win, […]

Pupule ballot: Sabers rattle roundball cage

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2017

Once again, Maryknoll is a unanimous pick at No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 this week. On my ballot, there’s one distinct change: Campbell. The Sabers pass my litmus test. Once we get below the Elite Teams (Maryknoll, Kamehameha); the A-/B+ teams that have championship talent and development labs (post underclassmen — Konawaena, Lahainaluna, ‘Iolani; the unbeaten, somewhat disrespected D-II program that beat two ranked teams soundly (St. Francis); the overachievers (Punahou, Waiakea)… we have Campbell. Of […]
