Pupule ballot: #1 to #35; Baldwin, Maui fear Lunas

By Paul Honda on December 27, 2017

Maybe it’s the soccer effect. Volleyball? Softball. All of the above? Pegging 35 teams and ranking them in girls basketball is not as fluid or smooth as it is with boys basketball, but I give it the ol’ pupule try. After all, the state’s best programs are as good as ever. Maryknoll has dominated local teams, hungry after back-to-back runner-up finishes at the state tourney. Kamehameha is still the second-best team in the rankings despite losing center Kalina Obrey (hand) […]

Maryknoll still No. 1, Kalani makes a splash

By Paul Honda on December 26, 2017

The Kalani Falcons have landed at No. 10 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10. Coach Chi Mok’s squad is on a six-game win streak and eked out Mid-Pacific by one point for the 10 spot in the voting by coaches and media. The Lady Falcons, 6-0 in OIA East play, visit unranked Kahuku on Wednesday night. Maryknoll remained the unanimous pick by coaches and media as the No. 1 team. The Spartans won three of four games at the […]

The Maryknoll Spartans finished 3-1 with a consolation title at the Tarkanian Classic today in Las Vegas. Maryknoll defeated Gillette (Wyo.) 53-50 today for ninth place. Spartans center Isabella Cravens and wing Kamalu Kamakawiwo‘ole were selected to the all-tournament team. The Spartans, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10, opened the tournament with a heartbreaking 49-47 overtime loss to Post Falls (Idaho). They defeated Buckeye Union (Ariz.) 62-26 on Thursday and Marlborough (Calif.) 69-27 on Friday. Maryknoll […]

By Paul Honda on December 23, 2017

Kaimi Kalei scored 15 points, including a key 3-pointer with 49 seconds left in regulation, as No. 5-ranked St. Francis rallied for a 41-37 victory over Hawaii Baptist in overtime on Saturday night at Dan Liu Gymnasium. The win kept St. Francis unbeaten and gave the Saints sole possession of first place in the ILH Division II standings at 7-0 (15-0 overall). HBA dropped to 5-1 in league play (14-5 overall), and the two titans of the division added another […]

Pupule ballot: From #1 (Maryknoll) to #21 (Kahuku)

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2017

The ILH is ahead of most leagues when it comes to preseason performance in girls basketball. Rugged is the word in a league where the lower half had been successful against perennial powerhouses. This ballot was submitted on Sunday for Monday’s Star-Advertiser Top 10 release. Here’s how I voted. (All win-loss records as of Saturday, Dec. 16.) Pupule BKG Top 10 12/17/17 1. Maryknoll Spartans (14-1, 3-0 ILH) Pupule ranking last week: No. 1. Last week’s games W 46-38 #2 […]

Defense writes winning code for No. 1 Maryknoll

By Paul Honda on December 15, 2017

Yes, No. 1 Maryknoll held on for a 46-38 win over No. 2 Kamehameha on Friday night. But with a key injury to one of the state’s best post players, Kamehameha really shouldn’t have been this close. “You didn’t give us enough credit,” Warriors coach Joseph Cho said. He’s right. I’ve seen quite a bit of this mature Warriors team. Young as they are, they hang in there no matter what the situation. And this time, the situation should’ve been […]
