The streak is over for the nine-time state champion Konawaena Wildcats. Waiakea put an end to Konawaena’s 124-game win streak in Big Island Interscholastic Federation girls basketball, stifling the Wildcats 54-25 on Thursday night. “It was senior night for our team, too. As coaches, we were definitely excited,” Waiakea coach Brandon Kauhi said. “We had a good defensive game plan and tonight we hit those outside shots.” Waiakea made four treys in the game, three of them before halftime. “That’s […]

Hoopbook: A fine time at the free-throw line

By Paul Honda on January 10, 2019

Kawika Lee scored 16 points against Mid-Pacific, helping ‘Iolani rally from an 11-0 deficit. He knocked down three 3-pointers, but also shot 1-for-5 at the free-throw line. Unless he took 15 3-point attempts, he shot a better percentage under duress from the arc than he did at the foul line. Some shooters are better in motion. Sam Wheeler, in that same game at Mills Gymnasium, shot 7-for-8 from the charity stripe to boost the Raiders. I learned recently that he […]

The opportunity was there. A win would’ve been sweet for the mighty Mules. A win would’ve given the Mules a share of first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association West, along with Radford (9-1). A three-way tie was possible. It didn’t happen. Mililani cemented its place atop the West with a 47-33 win. Dahlis Sablay led the unbeaten Trojans (10-0 OIA […]
