By Paul Honda on May 19, 2019

The 2019 class of the Hawaii High School Hall of Honor includes three elite level basketball players, as well as a good number of neighbor island standouts. Kalina Obrey of Kamehameha, the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball All-State player of the year, was voted into the Hall by the selection committee. So was boys player of the year Kameron Ng of St. Francis. He is the first — and only — boy to be inducted from the school, which will close its […]

Prime Time hoops brings students joy and gives them a chance

By Nick Abramo on April 16, 2019

Joy. Utter joy. That is the overwhelming vibe emanating from high school basketball gyms this April. It’s called Friday Night Prime Time and it has to be seen to be believed. What is it, though? High school basketball in April? Friday Night Prime Time fills the hardwood with players who typically wouldn’t have had a chance. They are special-needs and at-risk students, with peer mentors joining in. When you see the players during a game, it’s absolutely incredible. Nearly every […]

Brandon Kauhi out as Waiakea girls basketball coach after winning BIIF

By Paul Honda on March 19, 2019

Brandon Kauhi is no longer the girls basketball head coach at Waiakea. Kauhi declined to comment about the school’s decision to release him. He led the Warriors to their first Big Island Interscholastic Federation title since 2008, beating Konawaena once during the regular season — ending the Wildcats’ 124-game win streak in league play — and again in the tournament final. The Warriors reached the state tournament and lost to Kalani in the state quarterfinal round. They finished at No. […]

Kalina Obrey enters pantheon of epic girls hoopsters

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2019

A year ago, Kalina Obrey wasn’t sure where she belonged. Oh, she was perfectly situated at Kamehameha as the Warriors’ go-to post scorer and defender. But not many colleges wanted a 5-foot-10 post, not at the Division I level. Obrey was already ahead of the game. She went to work intensively, every day, on her perimeter skills with 808 Basketball coaches Bob Keanini and Hinano Higa in the offseason. A few teams, like Hawaii, were interested in her as a […]

Kalina Obrey is Gatorade Hawaii girls basketball player of the year

By Nick Abramo on March 16, 2019

Kamehameha’s Kalina Obrey is the Gatorade Hawaii girls basketball player of the year, the Gatorade Company announced recently. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. A 5-foot-10 senior forward, Obrey led the Warriors to an 18-7 record and an appearance in the Division I state final — a 52-49 heartbreaker to ‘Iolani. Obrey’s 29-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer was ultimately ruled no good because the shot didn’t leave […]

By Nick Abramo on March 16, 2019

Mid-Pacific has a new girls basketball coach. Reid Sagawa is the new hire, according to athletic director Scott Wagner. He takes over for Lisa Russell, who stepped down recently. The Owls went 1-9 in the recently completed ILH Division I season. Sagawa, a 1989 ‘Iolani graduate, is a former boys basketball coach at Kalani and with ‘Iolani’s Division II girls basketball team. “He is a fantastic coach and we’re glad to have him,” Wagner said.

Kalena Gibson caps comeback at Senior Classic

By Paul Honda on March 9, 2019

If there were a comeback player of the year award in prep basketball, Kalena Gibson would be a worthy candidate. Gibson scored 13 points, including nine in the second half to help spark a massive 36-16 run for the OIA squad against the ILH. The ILH rallied in the final few minutes for a 95-90 win in the Geremy Robinson Senior Classic, but Gibson wrapped up her prep career with immense courage. The Mililani senior tore her ACL late in […]
