We had only four turnovers and we […]

By Paul Honda on December 30, 2019

The cusp of the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 has become domain of the Valley Isle, it appears. While ‘Iolani retained No. 1 status with all 10 first-place votes today, Lahainaluna moved up a notch to No. 9 and Maui landed in the Top 10 for the first time in several years. Maui essentially replaces King Kekaulike after stunning Na Alii 63-52 last week at the Sabers’ gym. King Kekaulike had replaced Seabury Hall the week before after ending Lahainaluna’s […]

Hoopbook: King Kekaulike lands at No. 9, then loses to Maui

By Paul Honda on December 24, 2019

Dynastic-level programs are rare to find these days. The result, though, is a plus when it comes to parity in girls basketball. Particularly in ILH Division II and the MIL. On Saturday, Mid-Pacific went to Central Oahu to take on Hanalani in a battle between D-II title contenders. The Owls left Hanalani’s gym with a wild 45-42 win, rallying from an eight-point halftime deficit. Former Advertiser sportswriter (and HCC math professor) Frank Mauz took the game in on Saturday morning […]

Hoopbook: Lunas’ streak ends, ‘MIL is wide open’

By Paul Honda on December 20, 2019

The problem with any streak is that it comes to an end eventually. That isn’t necessarily bad, of course, even if it was a win streak that has been snapped. Lahainaluna’s 164-game win streak in Maui Interscholastic League play was and probably will be a mark that won’t be matched or surpassed. The Lady Lunas 52-44 homecourt loss to King Kekaulike — at Lahaina Civic Center — is a stunner, but isn’t shocking. Upcountry Maui has produced talented players before. […]

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2019

Kamehameha got its revenge and Waiakea is making noise. The Kamehameha Warriors avenged an early loss to Konawaena by winning decisively, 58-45, on Saturday at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic. Coach Pua Straight‘s Warriors moved up a spot to No. 2, switching places with the BIIF powerhouse Wildcats. Waiakea is now 7-0, and though the Warriors haven’t traveled off the Big Island yet, they have wins over Kahuku and Lahainaluna. New coach Alika Smith has the Warriors humming on all cylinders. […]
