‘Iolani’s toughness, poise crucial in winning second straight state championship

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2020

The ‘Iolani Raiders are generally positionless, but their status is on a throne. ‘Iolani withstood everything the Konawaena dynasty brought to battle. Even after losing a 14-point lead, trailing 33-28 in the third quarter, the Raiders never wilted. They just grew stronger. The skill is across the roster. The savvy is, as well. The power, though, generates from sisters Lily Wahinekapu and Jovi Lefotu, who combined for 42 points, 10 rebounds and five steals as ‘Iolani made it back-to-back state […]

‘Iolani’s Dean Young focused on stopping two of the best players in the state in tonight’s title tilt

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2020

Dean Young has seen the game from many angles. He’s not exaggerating in the slightest, he says, when he states that Konawaena’s Caiyle Kaupu and Kaliana Salazar-Harrell are at the top of the list in Hawaii girls basketball. Young guided ‘Iolani to the state championship last year, and after wins over Moanalua and Waiakea, the Raiders are in prime position going into tonight’s matchup with second-seeded Konawaena. “Konawaena is tough. Two of the best players in the state. They’re difficult […]

Kahuku getting closer and closer to the promised land

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2020

More than maybe any year in the past two decades, the 2020 Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships is about the youth brigades. From Konawaena to Kahuku, underclassmen have filled the void. Kahuku learned on Friday night that they’re close to the promised land. A 56-39 loss to perennial powerhouse Konawaena put an end to a remarkable run that began on the last day of preseason — a win over OIA West powerhouse Radford — and into the state tourney with […]

Waiakea G Kelsie Imai: ‘I learned a lot from Coach Alika’

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2020

There will be no All-Big Island girls basketball state final, but the Waiakea Warriors sure gave it a shot. With the second-seeded Konawaena Wildcats seated and looking on with the rest of the crowd of 886 at Blaisdell Arena, Waiakea pushed top-seeded ‘Iolani from the opening tip. Trailing 22-16 at the half, Waiakea got within two points of the defending state champions. Then ‘Iolani got a pair of 3-point bombs from Alexis Huntimer to open a 37-27 lead with 1:15 […]

Career-high 37 points by Caiyle Kaupu powers Konawaena

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2020

Night and day, day and night. Caiyle Kaupu has gone from one extreme to another, and her Konawaena teammates and coaches are quite stoked about this. Kaupu struggled with six points in the Wildcats’ 40-37 win over King Kekaulike on Thursday. On Friday, she was unstoppable on the block against the one of the state’s strongest defensive teams, Kahuku. Kaupu pumped in 37 points, one shy of the state-tournament record, on 17-for-20 shooting from the field as the second-seeded Wildcats […]

HBA stuns Seabury Hall, Hanalani ousts Waimea as ILH dominates D-II state tourney

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2020

This is why we play the game. In Hilo, anything can happen with a field this balanced. Now we have the ILH’s first-, second- and third-place teams in the final four of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships in Division II. Parity, or ILH D-II, now rules, and defending state champion Hawaii Baptist is back in the picture after finishing third in the ILH. The Eagles’ 50-37 win over 2-seed Seabury Hall says a lot about the tough ILH Division […]

Defensive stopper Serina Aumua-Tuisavura comes up big on offense for Kahuku

By Paul Honda on February 7, 2020

The muscle and hustle is real for the Kahuku Power Co. Even against the low-post bangers of Maryknoll, Kahuku won the battle under the glass and went on to eliminate the ailing, cold bug-ravaged Spartans from state-title contention with a 43-27 win on Thursday night in the Division I quarterfinals of the Snapple/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships at Earl C. Holmer Gymnasium. >> PHOTO GALLERY: Kahuku vs. Maryknoll Kahuku’s man-to-man defense was air-tight. Maryknoll coach Chico Furtado, who coached Kahuku […]
