APRIL 12, 2005: Iolani girls basketball team stays unbeaten

On this day in 2005, Iolani stayed unbeaten with a 43-31 win over Maryknoll after a strong start. Alana Wall led the Raiders with 10 points and three different Iolani players hit from long range. Iolani ended up making the state tournament while Maryknoll did not, finishing fifth. ILH champion Punahou won states.

APRIL 8, 1920: Maui without a champ in girls basketball

On this date in 1920, Maui had no definitive champion in girls basketball. Maui High and Alexander House of Wailuku were unable to reach terms on a championship after both schools finished the regular season at 3-1 in the three-team league. The contention was on where the championship would be played. Maui wanted it held on an outdoor court and Wailuku preferred to stay indoors to suit its faster style of play. On this date in 2001, the Punahou girls basketball team beat Kamehameha 51-48 in a battle of unbeatens. Becky Hogue led the scoring for the Buffanblu with 13 points, handing the Warriors their first ILH loss in more than a year. Elyse Umeda added 11 points and Caroline Ane contributed nine. APRIL 4, 1989: Francine Stone scores 34 points for Roosevelt

On this date in 1989, Roosevelt’s Francine Stone scored 34 points in a playoff win over Kalaheo, but it could have been more. She missed nine free throws. The Rough Riders earned their third win of the season but had to face unbeaten Farrington the next night. The Governors limited Stone to 11 points and Roosevelt failed to make the state tournament. Stone never got to play at states and the school’s drought wasn’t broken until 1993.

APRIL 3, 1998: Farrington’s Robynn Afe scores 29 in loss to Kahuku

On this date in 1998, the Kahuku girls basketball team proved that a balanced approach can overcome even the brightest star. Nine different Red Raiders scored points and Kahuku beat Farrington 49-45 despite Robynn Afe’s 29 points — 22 in the second half. Neither team was a match for Kalaheo for the OIA title but Kahuku made it to states where it lost both games, 67-59 to Konawaena and 34-29 to Waipahu.
