Damien ready for ‘Iolani’s rough play this time around

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2019

Sometimes, in a land with perhaps two of the most unusual high school leagues in the nation, the best battles occur before the big dance. The immense size of the OIA, which has 23 active football programs, is matched by very few leagues nationally. The ILH, with a total of six football teams, is left in a conundrum, seeing quality programs sit during the state tournament due to basic mathematics. For the ILH, this is true every year, every season, […]

Pac-Five Coach Kip Botelho: Bowl game was ‘long shot’ anyway

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2019

Everyone is content, maybe even Pac-Five. The Wolfpack finished regular-season play 6-3 in Division II play. By all accounts, they’re a team worthy of a playoff spot. But in the era of interleague play, Pac-Five is the outlier, the only program that didn’t have a chance to qualify for postseason play because its league, the ILH, didn’t have any other D-II teams. The invigorated, interleague regular-season schedule for ILH and Oahu Interscholastic Association teams has been absorbed and embraced by […]

HIlo QB Kyan Miyasato’s 33 TD passes not a BIIF single-season record

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2019

UPDATE: This story is no longer accurate. For our correction on the BIIF single-season record, click here. ——— For much of Hilo’s storied history in BIIF football, titles have been drenched in rain, mud and the longest cleats available in athletic stores. This year’s unbeaten Vikings squad has been part of a divergence from the norm. Hilo quarterback Kyan Miyasato broke the league record for touchdown passes in a single season over the weekend. Miyasato’s 33 TDs surpasses the previous […]

Road Less Travelled: How Shepherd Kekahuna, Ope Laloulu, Bubbah Aina-Chaves nearly went to Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on October 21, 2019

Another time, another place, almost another lifetime. It has only been five months, if that, since St. Francis ceased to exist as a high school. The football program, once proud and sturdy, had risen through the ranks as the biggest, possibly most athletic Division II program in the state and was unbeaten. A tiny school in Manoa Valley, ranked in the statewide Top 10, without even a home field to call its own. The final season of Saints football came […]
