VOTE: Waianae’s Torii Field vs. El Paso’s RR Jones Stadium in USA Today Poll

By Paul Honda on October 28, 2019

Raymond Torii Field is in the final four. The USA Today’s Best High School Stadium Poll is now in its third round and Waianae’s Torii Field is one of the semifinalists. Last week’s voting began with a strong surge for Jelsma Stadium (Okla.), but voters pushed Torii to a landslide victory. Out of 38,291 votes, Torii Field finished with nearly 67 percent of the count with 25,615. Jelsma tallied 33 percent (12,676). The new round pits Torii Field against heavy […]

Only 3 football state berths remain to be settled

By Nick Abramo on October 27, 2019

Eleven of the 14 state-tournament berths are settled. ‘Iolani and Campbell locked up their tournament spots with victories Friday. The Raiders got past ILH rival Damien 21-14 to become the ILH Division I representative at states. The Sabers dropped Farrington 28-14 for third place in the OIA Open to get in. In addition, three OIA teams — Kahuku in the Open, Moanalua in D-I, and Kaimuki in D-II — who had previously clinched state spots, assured themselves of a better […]

Mililani looks to jump-start offense for states

By Brian McInnis on October 27, 2019

Any moments of offensive rhythm between Mililani and Kahuku on Saturday night were like visits from a long-lost friend who couldn’t stay around to chat and catch up. Kahuku got the better of a rock fight at Aloha Stadium, prevailing 7-3 to claim its 27th OIA championship and deny Mililani a repeat Open Division title and a fifth overall under coach Rod York. The night started for Mililani with a clanged field-goal attempt off the left upright and didn’t get […]

Losses lifted Kaimuki to list of OIA winners

By Christian Shimabuku on October 27, 2019

The midday sun beamed on the Kaimuki sideline from the start of its biggest game of the year. With a 2 p.m. kickoff and temperatures rising to as high 96 degrees on the field, the mauka side of Aloha Stadium and its lack of shade was not kind to the Bulldogs. David Tautofi’s squad didn’t have a choice but to gut it out. With just 26 players suited up, Kaimuki rose to the sweltering occasion and pulled out a 27-24 […]

Kahuku stays true to form to get back to where it belongs

By Christian Shimabuku on October 27, 2019

The year 2017 may be too recent to evoke feelings of nostalgia, but not if you’re a follower of Kahuku football. On Saturday night at Aloha Stadium, the Red Raiders downed Mililani 7-3 to win the OIA Open Division title, making it just two years since their last league title. To some, that gap felt like an eternity. “We were thinking about that this whole week, that it’s actually been a while,” said cornerback Kaonohi Kaniho, who was a sophomore […]

Kahuku wins 27th OIA championship in the most Kahuku of ways

By Billy Hull on October 27, 2019

You can’t fault Kahuku coach Sterling Carvalho for trying. Early on this season, the Red Raiders were a mixed bag on offense. At times they were able to ground and pound opponents, but they also weren’t afraid to put four wide receivers out on the field and try to throw the ball around a little bit. After three straight years of losing to Saint Louis in the state tournament, including twice in the championship game, Kahuku felt the need to […]

Leilehua lands on wrong side of instant classic with Moanalua

By Christian Shimabuku on October 26, 2019

Two of the OIA’s best teams in Division I provided an instant classic in Saturday night’s championship game. No. 8 Moanalua and No. 7 Leilehua both had its opportunities to win in regulation, making it all the more agonizing for whoever would lose. It was Leilehua which fell 21-20 in double overtime. The Mules also had two prominent chances to win, but potential game-winning field goals by Konapiliahi Raymond were missed at the end of regulation and in the first […]

Moanalua football celebrates OIA Division I title for injured quarterback RJ Javar

By Christian Shimabuku on October 26, 2019

RJ Javar has only been at Moanalua for a season, but the senior quarterback and Mililani transfer has already made a lasting impression on Na Menehune. Although Javar was unable to play in the second half of No. 8 Moanalua’s 21-20 double-overtime win over No. 7 Leilehua in the OIA Division I championship game on Saturday night, his teammates made it clear that the win was because of him and not in spite of his absence. Na Menehune went up […]
