By Nick Abramo on November 14, 2019

SECOND IN A SERIES (On the five Neighbor Island teams in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships) Kamehameha-Hawaii is not shying away from playing against some of the state’s best. Even though the BIIF is going through some growing pains and leaving the Warriors with a weaker regular-season schedule, the squad under first-year coach Shaun Perry was busy playing a strong nonleague schedule and taking care of business in the conference. And there haven’t been many breaks. Kamehameha-Hawaii has […]

Lahainaluna’s Joshua Tihada looks to pull off a state slam — in football

By Nick Abramo on November 14, 2019

Joshua Tihada loves his football. A determined player who doesn’t have college offers, he is the that type who he could walk on at the next level somewhere and make an impact. Tihada is a four-year Lahainaluna contributor. Mainly a running back, he has also been a stalwart at the defensive back/linebacker hybrid position. One time last summer, Tihada went on a mainland trip in which he went to five different football camps. “It was crazy,” he said. “We got […]

The art of breaking in brand-new, state-tourney footballs

By Paul Honda on November 12, 2019

Jaymason Lee has a specific rule about new footballs: don’t let the kickers mess with them. Savaii Eselu trusts his steel brush with them. Every year, each head coach at the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships is allotted three new footballs to use. No other balls are permitted. This year, instead of receiving the new, slick balls on game day, they were distributed to coaches on Sunday at the HHSAA’s coaches meeting. That gives teams at least five days […]
