Out of the shadows, Leilehua WR Jonathan Vasquez steps up at JPS Senior Bowl

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2019

Maybe this was the last touchdown catch of Jonathan Vasquez’s life, but it probably won’t be. There just aren’t that maybe 6-foot-2, 195-pound pass catchers with the body control, deep-ball skills and focus that he has. Maybe this is just the first chapter in a new book for the Leilehua senior. Playing in a defensive, almost tortuous (for fans of offensive football) demonstration of might by Team Liberty, Vasquez stepped up in a large way on Friday night. He hauled […]

Mililani’s Raysen Motoyama, Tristen Townes earn hardware at JPS Senior Bowl

By Paul Honda on December 8, 2019

For the rest of their lives, Mililani teammates Raysen Motoyama and Tristen Townes will be connected thanks to Friday night’s JPS Senior Bowl Classic. Motoyama earned an offensive player of the game honor, scoring the only touchdown for Team Liberty. Townes, lining up at defensive end for Liberty, was named defensive player of the game. Playing in the Commanders contest, Motoyama’s versatility was in play. The Trojan running back/slotback had five receptions for 26 yards in a battle dominated by […]

Twin brothers Josh, Caleb Matagi relish their head-to-head JPS Senior Bowl battle

By Paul Honda on December 7, 2019

Three sacks later, Joshua Matagi was excited. After Team Freedom rallied for a 12-6 win over Team Liberty, he was satisfied. The Farrington senior had a night to remember at the JPS Senior Bowl Classic Commanders game. His twin brother, Caleb (5-10, 245), lined up at right tackle for Team Liberty. The two squared off for one series — Liberty’s lone scoring drive for a 6-0 lead midway through the fourth quarter. He tried, but Josh Matagi (5-10, 225) didn’t […]

Waianae’s Nainoa Machado ends high school career with MVP performance

By Nick Abramo on December 7, 2019

Get Nainoa Machado the ball and chances are he will do something with it. The 6-foot, 195-pound Waianae wide receiver did something that’s quite difficult to do in this day and age. Despite being on the losing team, he won the MVP award in the first game of the JPS Senior Bowl Classic doubleheader Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Machado caught eight passes for 88 yards and scored all three of Team Liberty’s touchdowns in a 23-21 loss to Team […]

By Nick Abramo on December 7, 2019

After finishing his high school career in the first game of the JPS Senior Bowl Football Classic doubleheader Saturday night, Nanakuli’s Sedric Crawford gave his performance and the team’s victory a thumb’s up. “I think this was one of my best games,” Crawford said after throwing for 206 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 36 yards and another TD for Freedom in a 23-21 victory over Liberty at Aloha Stadium. “I could depend on my receivers and the line […]

LIVE BLOG: Game 2 of JPS Senior Bowl Classic

By Billy Hull on December 7, 2019

Team Freedom 12, Team Liberty 6, final Kickoff is a pooch, no real kickers in this exhibition. Liberty tries its darnedest to emulate the old Stanford miracle kick return. Eventually, Rashod Tanner (Moanalua) tackles Natividad near midfield to end this sneakily fun battle. Game over. No major injuries, hallelujah. RJ Javar scrambles for 13 yards to the Liberty 45, then finds Jayzon Ramos for a 24-yard gain to the 21. Time out, :14 left. Last TO for Freedom. Javar eludes […]
