Mid-Pacific suspends three sports for upcoming season

Fall football took a hit today when Mid-Pacific President Paul Turnbull outlined his school’s plan for reopening amid the Coronavirus pandemic. The school intends on opening for in-class instruction on August 17 but will not participate in three sports, two in the fall and one in the winter. That means no football, cheerleading or wrestling. Hall of Honor selects 12 more legends

The newest class of the Hall of Honor was selected on Sunday, awarding each athlete a $2,000 scholarship from Enterprise. >> Nanea Estrella, Lahainaluna She is a four-time state champion in wrestling, the sixth girl in state history to do so and the second from Maui, joining Lahainaluna’s Lalelei Mataafa from 2016. APRIL 21, 1969: ILH approves spring football

On this day in 1969, the ILH passed a rule allowing football programs to practice in the spring without helmets and pads. Programs were allowed to practice for 10 consecutive days in May. The league also decided to use National Federation rules to keep it in line with the other leagues in the state. The biggest change was not allowing a defensive player to advance the ball after recovering a fumble.

APRIL 18, 2003: Joe Onosai tackles coaching

On this day in 2003, former UH football star Joe Onosai agreed to coach his alma mater. Onosai took the reigns for Pac-Five, taking over for Don Botelho. He lasted only one season, and is still one of only two coaches to lead the program not named Botelho. Leon Schumacher was the coach in the program’s first year in 1973. APRIL 6, 2000: ILH sets roster limit for football

On this date in 2000, the ILH passed a rule limiting football teams to a roster limit of 65 without telling the coaches or athletic directors. Saint Louis boss Cal Lee vowed to fight it. With the COVID-19 virus shutdown in effect, the Campbell football players are still finding ways to work out — but only after doing their daily chores. Tamatoa, who is signed with Hawaii, and Titus, who has 15 college scholarship offers, chatted about life in the new reality.
