By Paul Honda on July 14, 2020

The route from Honolulu to Naples, Fla., is worth the 14-day quarantine for Anthony Sagapolutele. The Saint Louis senior-to-be made the trip to Naples for the FBU Top Gun Showcase and earned a spot on the Top Defensive Linemen honors. The three-day event gathered the top football seniors in the nation at the brand-new Paradise Coast Sports Complex. In his tweet, the 6-foot-2, 260-pound DL called it an honor. “It was an honor to participate in the FBU Camp in […]

Saturday morning grind: Crusaders among early birds training on sand

By Paul Honda on July 13, 2020

Two hours of non-stop running and hurdling in the sand is exactly what some of the most dedicated student-athletes in the state want on Saturday mornings. Three of them, Saint Louis football players Tasi Tadio, Iona Purcell and Prince Solomon, barely broke a sweat despite the constant footwork and 20- to 40-yard sprints at Ala Moana Beach Park at 7 a.m. The training is coordinated by Liahona Youth Empowerment. Approximately 50 athletes worked out, including a few from the Hawaii […]

Big ‘Red’ Debate from Pennsylvania to Kahuku

By Paul Honda on July 10, 2020

(Update: Bellefonte High School in Pennsylvania is still debating on a possible name change.) In Pennsylvania, a high school may cease being the Red Raiders. In Lubbock, Texas, a prominent university thrives as Red Raiders. What’s the difference? Possibly, community support. Since the beginning of American democracy, communities create the standards and often times, laws are created to reflect those values, for better or worse. At Kahuku, where “Red Raiders” as an identity has been set in stone since 1950, […]

According to Ian Scheuring of Hawaii News Now, however, the date is Aug. 19. Scheuring’s tweet on Thursday afternoon caught administrators off guard. That could change with an official announcement on Friday. The Hawaii High School Athletic Association has a statewide start date for football practice, Aug. 17, but that is expected to change — possibly because of the […]

The school has been “Red Raiders” for decades after receiving much-needed uniforms from ‘Iolani generations ago. While ‘Iolani later dropped “Red” from its nickname two decades ago, Kahuku has thrived in athletics and has a rich tradition, particularly in football. The online petition has 478 signatures as of […]

ALMOST FAMOUS: 2001 Iolani Raiders

By Jerry Campany on July 1, 2020

Hawaii Prep World will highlight 10 of the best football teams in Oahu history that never earned a division, league or state crown. For a team to be on this list, it inevitably had to have suffered an upset loss that probably lived with the players and coaches for a long time. Teams are ranked by positive point differential, excluding the 2010 Kahuku and 2018 St. Francis squads that had games wiped out due to the use of an ineligible […]
