By Paul Honda on August 7, 2020

Not one, not two, not three… but 15. Fifteen Friday mornings in a row, the Kaimuki Bulldogs football team and families have shown up to distribute food boxes to the community. “There’s usually three or four guys in a group. In the boxes, there’s laulau, Portuguese sausage, pipikaula,” three-sport senior Koby Moananu said. “A lot of meats,” Tony Stevens added. “I think people just come out, not because they need it, but because maybe other people need it. They give […]

By Paul Honda on August 6, 2020

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s announcement on Wednesday means football, girls volleyball and competitive cheer will have to wait. Taking precautions to postpone the higher- and moderate-risk fall sports — football, girls volleyball, cross country and competitive cheer — to winter, possibly as early as January, is a big change for coaches across the state. ‘Iolani football coach and co-athletic director Wendell Look cautioned that January is not a lock as a start date because of the nature of […]

By Paul Honda on August 5, 2020

The strangest year of high school athletics could not be more of a mystery for Punahou’s interim head football coach, Leonard Lau. The longtime assistant was the offensive coordinator for the past two seasons as Punahou challenged for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title. The Buffanblu were 10-2 last year, losing only to national powerhouse Saint Louis. When the school removed veteran coach and assistant athletic director Kale Ane, at least for the time being, during its investigation into alleged […]

By Paul Honda on July 26, 2020

The scenario in California, even Nevada, is different than it is in Hawaii. Earlier in the week, Nevada became the fifth state to postpone the high school football season. California, New Mexico, Virginia and Washington have made similar decisions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevada took a different approach, moving fall sports to February. Fall sports will follow the winter season and be completed before the spring season. In Hawaii, three consecutive days of increasing single-day record case totals […]

HHSAA: Independent, large-group workouts discouraged, not banned

By Paul Honda on July 21, 2020

The Hawaii High School Athletic Association’s update on Monday about no-contact rules extended to Aug. 18, but Executive Director Chris Chun expounded on the announcement. On Tuesday morning, Chun noted that workouts for student-athletes away from campus with independent groups are technically not banned by the HHSAA. The issue surfaces when team coaches are in contact with players from the same school. Groups of student-athletes from various sports and schools are free to work out with non-school coaches, Chun added. […]

Red Raiders or Raiders: A legacy worth keeping or evolving?

By Paul Honda on July 20, 2020

The debate continues for the passionate and compassionate fans of the Kahuku Red Raiders. Monday’s story in the Star-Advertiser about the ongoing petitions for and against the nickname included interviews with three prominent voices in the discussion. Generational, familial ties to the school are deeply rooted. Tanoai Reed played for Kahuku, as did his father and son. Kahuku graduate and Kamehameha high school teacher Norm “T-Man” Thompson also played for the Red Raiders, but has changed his perspective over time. […]
