While he was running for Punahou, the Buffanblu broke the 4×100 medley mark. Suite was a 2009 Star-Advertiser first-team safety. “We’re just heartbroken. Sad. Even though we knew he was fighting an uphill battle, it’s just tough to hear,” said Kale Ane, who coached Suite during his Punahou varsity career. “We can just hope he’s in […]

By Paul Honda on August 24, 2020

The world of Jayhawks and Vikings won’t be the same without Tanikeni “Isi” Holani. The Kansas and Hilo defensive tackle died on Saturday in Hilo. Holani was just 24. No cause of death has been determined yet. Kaeo Drummondo, now Hilo’s athletic director, was a defensive coordinator when Holani wore the blue and gold. “The news of Isi’s passing was just devastating to learn. What I remember most about him as an athlete was his leadership in the program,” Drummondo […]

Depending on who knows who, there was or was not discussion within the Oahu Interscholastic Association about the most current issue: Would student-athletes be permitted to play one sport in two separate seasons and states in the coming academic year? That was a question for Kahuku running back Zealand Matagi, who had his eyes on Utah powerhouse Skyridge. Former Kamehameha quarterback Kia‘i Keone transferred there in late July and is on the roster. Matagi, a Star-Advertiser All-State selection, decided to […]

By Paul Honda on August 14, 2020

Kaeo Drummondo is a man with many dreams. The dilemma for the highly successful coach was a win-win either way: stay at Kamehameha as an assistant coach, or apply for the athletic director position at Hilo. Drummondo elected to put his name in the hat, and now, he succeeds Kurt Kawachi as the Vikings AD. “If somebody told me this 12 months ago, I’d say, no way. It’s totally unexpected. When opportunity knocks, you’ve got to answer,” Drummondo said. In […]

Kahuku standout Zion Ah You resists temptation to transfer, stays home

By Paul Honda on August 12, 2020

In the end, Zion Ah You wouldn’t surrender his chance for one last season as a Kahuku Red Raider. The Star-Advertiser All-State defensive lineman could have taken a route to Utah this fall while Hawaii high school football goes dormant. Utah powerhouse Orem, which won the 5A state title last year, is home to some of Ah You’s relatives. The Tigers have won three state crowns in a row, but he thought better of it. “No way. Only if they […]
