ON THIS DATE: Halftime speech by Joe Francis wakes Pearl City

By Jerry Campany on September 18, 2020

On this date in 1976, Anthony Canyon scored two touchdowns and led Pearl City to a 14-13 upset of Kailua. Canyon and the Chargers, who didn’t have a single boy weighing more than 200 pounds, were late to the party. Pearl City was manhandled by the bigger Surfriders in the first half and only advanced the ball past the 50-yard line once. When coach Joe Francis led them into halftime, they only trailed by a single score. When Francis hit […]

By Jerry Campany on September 17, 2020

On this date in 1982, Laotian soccer prodigy Sirideth Lanpouthakoun booted a 24-yard field goal with 3:32 left to help Kaimuki over Kahuku 3-0 at Roosevelt. A 24-yard chip shot would normally be no big deal, but Lanpouthakoun missed his previous two attempts (from 27 and 41 yards) in the defensive struggle. Michael Taamilo was a beast for Kaimuki against Kahuku’s formidible offense. He had three tackles for losses and helped hold quarterback Lane Santiago to 32 passing yards and […]

By Jerry Campany on September 15, 2020

Kolten Wong was destined to be a major-league baseball player, but he never let it stop him from giving his all on the football field. On this date in 2006, Wong had 44 carries and a career-high 260 yards as Kamehameha-Hawaii beat Keaau 34-20 for the Warriors’ first victory of the young season. Perhaps even more impressive than his totals, Wong carried the ball 12 straight times while his team nursed a 7-point lead in the fourth quarter. He picked […]

Arizona makes it 18 offers for Punahou junior Tevarua Tafiti

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2020

When April began, the COVID-19 pandemic had Hawaii in lockdown and Tevarua Tafiti was a Punahou sophomore grinding away with his homework and workouts. There was not a single scholarship offer. As of mid-September, Arizona offered a scholarship — on Thursday — and the 6-foot-3, 208-pound junior defensive end now has 18 offers on the table. Arizona is the 11th Pac-12 Conference program to formalize its interest in Tafiti. On the same day, Arizona made an offer to Roosevelt junior […]

Former Castle LB Jaydon Kaio starting for nationally-ranked Corner Canyon

By Paul Honda on September 7, 2020

A year ago, Jaydon Kaio was a play-making 6-foot-1, 160-pound linebacker at Castle. Today, the senior is now 175 pounds and starting at linebacker for Utah’s No. 1-ranked team, Corner Canyon (4-0). His new hometown is Draper. “Draper is probably like Hawaii Kai. They’re really rich in this area,” Kaio said on Monday morning. “It’s a bit different and more complex, I’d say. I’m good at rushing the passer and I can bring a hit. I can cover because of […]

By Paul Honda on September 5, 2020

This year has been a strange time for Chansen Garcia, but there are still a few gems in the process. PrepStar Magazine named the Kahuku defensive back to its Class of 2023 All-American team. “I’m happy. I’m really happy. I’m blessed and thankful this happened for the future. I just keep working. That’s all I can do, is work,” Garcia said on Saturday. PrepStar reached out to Garcia two weeks ago after seeing video of individual position drills and his […]
