Tiki Vasconcellos invented the Boom Series offense in years earlier, and on this date in 1960 it was running on all cylinders. Steve Nakamura scored two touchdowns and fell two yards short of a third as Roosevelt crushed Kaimuki 25-0 before a crowd of 10,000 at Honolulu Stadium. On this date in 1978, John Kamana carried Punahou to a 27-21 win over Iolani. Kamana was one of the ILH’s best receivers before dotting USC’s famous I formation as a tailback against Iolani. All Kamana did from there was rush for 200 yards, return a kickoff 85 yards for a TD and and add 15 yards receiving. On this date in 1984, Pac-Five needed everything it had to beat pesky Damien. The victory left the Wolf pack tied with the Saint Louis Crusaders and Kamehameha Warriors at 4-1 in the ILH standings. Pac-Five eanred its big victory thanks to a game-saving tackle by James Markwith followed by Garrett Gabriel hitting Jason Anzai from 60 yards out for a score with 4:11 left. On this date in 1996, Kaiser quarterback Grant Sato woke up from a nightmare just in time to save the Cougars from a certain loss. Kaiser beat Radford 10-6 to take first place in the OIA Blue. Sato was an anemic 3-for-34 for just 60 yards against Radford’s stout defense when he decided to try to do something with his feet. Torres, a linebacker, torched McKinley for 184 rushing yards in a 26-21 victory over McKinley. On this date in 1932, Rusty Blaisdell‘s McKinley crew looked like the team to beat. The Tigers opened their season with a 13-0 victory over the University of Hawaii, completely dominating the Deans on defense, rolling up a 141-24 yardage advantage in the first half. On this date in 1987, Hilo ended Konawaena’s 40-game winning streak. The Vikings got five interceptions in the second half and Kamaka Mahoe hauled in a pass from Mark Ishii for the historic win. The Wildcats had not lost since 1982, when Hilo did the trick.
