By Jerry Campany on October 14, 2020

On this date in 1995, Punahou running back Afatia Thompson put on a show for the last time in his prep career. The future UH fullback tied it with a 2-yard plunge and followed it up with scores from 10 and 13 yards. Thompson needed only 15 carries and one reception to […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: Kamehameha rues Iolani’s return

By Jerry Campany on October 13, 2020

Iolani returned to the ILH after sitting out three years during World War II and didn’t take long to make an impact. On this date in 1945, coach Father Bray and all-star center Edward Hamada called on a couple of backups to make big plays and the Raiders stunned Kamehameha 14-0 in front of 12,000 fans at Honolulu Stadium. Bray countered Kamehameha’s superior size with frequent substitutions and it led to a surprising shutout of one of the league’s favorites. […]

Campbell DB, Hawaii commit Peter Manuma fueled daily by vaifala power

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2020

Peter Manuma says he is stronger, even two inches taller today because of vaifala. Manuma is on his way to the Polynesian Bowl in January, and if the timing proceeds as expected, it will be the first on-field football game action for the Campbell senior since last season. The game is still expected to be played on Jan. 23, 2021, which would probably be before the start of the Hawaii high school football season. “It’s truly an honor, a big […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Mark Atuaia and Randall Okimoto face off

By Jerry Campany on October 12, 2020

On this date in 1990, Mark Atuaia rushed for 228 yards on 24 carries and Kahuku beat Farrington 26-14 at Aloha Stadium. The Red Raiders won the battle of unbeatens mostly because Farrington coach Skippa Diaz stubbornly double-teamed Kahuku end Itula Mili, who was held without a catch. Atuaia didn’t carry the ball until seven minutes into the game and was thrown for losses three times in the first half. Farrington running back Randall Okimoto had 111 yards on 21 […]

By Jerry Campany on October 11, 2020

Akina was the first prep quarterback in Hawaii history to throw for 1,000 yards as a sophomore and closed his prep career with a state record 5,025. Saint Louis coach Cal Lee called him “the best pure passer we ever saw.” Ferd Lewis of the Honolulu Advertiser […]

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Mililani beats Waianae at its own game

By Jerry Campany on October 10, 2020

On this date in 2003, Mililani traveled to Waianae and did its best impression of Searider football. The Trojans dominated time of possession — usually Waianae’s forte — to leave the West side with a key 27-20 victory and control of the OIA Red West. Peter Ranses led the Trojans with 97 yards rushing and quarterback Maka Kahoano threw for 167 yards, 90 of them on seven catches by Darren Smith. Mililani improved to 7-0 and won its next two […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1948: William Heilbron’s speed leads to Punahou upset

By Jerry Campany on October 9, 2020

On this date in 1948, Punahou pulled off another upset. The Buffablu, who were expected to be bottom feeders in preseason dope after losing a large senior class, rode a stifling defense and the speed of William Heilbron to upset heavily favored Kamehameha 6-0 in front of a crowd of 18,000. It was Punahou’s third straight victory. Although the victory made the Buffanblu the team to beat, Kamehameha came back to win the league title. But for one day, the […]

By Jerry Campany on October 8, 2020

On this date in 1954, Tiki Vasconcellos and Roosevelt scored five touchdowns in the first half and overwhelmed Farrington 38-7. Quarterback Clayton Ching scored two touchdowns before being pulled because of the rout. Vasconcellos pulled his starters after the fourth touchdown, showing some mercy toward the overmatched Governors. Punahou ended up winning the ILH that year, but the Rough Riders took it the following three years.
