ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Tom Tuinei saves the day for Waianae

By Jerry Campany on October 19, 2020

Waianae’s 6-4, 240-pound Tom Tuinei was often considered too big to be a linebacker, so he was certainly too big to be a safety. Tuinei proved all of that wrong on this date in 1975, picking off a pass late in the game to lead Waianae to a 7-0 win over Waipahu at Aloha Stadium. Tuinei intercepted three of Scott Chan‘s passes the previous week. His running mate was Eliu Wilson, and the pair combined to make up one of […]

By Jerry Campany on October 18, 2020

It took three games, but on this date in 1946 William Wise’s McKinley offense finally clicked. The Tigers struggled with Wise’s complicated scheme in the first two games of the season but had it figured out with a 27-7 win over Iolani. Wise was known for his efficient passing game, not attempting a throw until it was complete set up to succeed. It was the case against the Raiders, as the Tigers went 6-for-7 for 48 yards. Halfback Kenneth Andrade […]

Kamehameha/Wasatch LB Tausili Akana considers Nebraska offer

By Paul Honda on October 17, 2020

The day will come when Tausili Akana will long to wear the navy blue uniform of a Kamehameha Warrior. For now, however, he is a Wasatch Wasp, busy with the title chase in Utah. He also has one more scholarship offer to ponder: Nebraska. “I’m really excited about Nebraska for many reasons. Of course, my older sister Keonilei loves it in Lincoln,” Akana said of the 2019 Star-Advertiser girls volleyball player of the year. “They sell out all their football […]

Puli broke the record held by Iolani’s Paul Ah Yat, who had 350 in 1989. His five touchdown passes tied a league record shared by Garrett Gabriel, John Hao and Joel Lane. Puli completed 19 of his 36 attempts and did not throw an interception. Seven […]

Kahuku waited decades for funding to materialize, practicing on a flood-prone field. The push from community and State Rep. Sean Quinlan led to the project, which began on Monday. Nearly $10 million was released by Gov. David Ige. “Four years ago, before I was first elected, I knocked on doors in Koolauloa to […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Iolani’s John Stephens succeeds after switch

By Jerry Campany on October 15, 2020

On this date in 1988, Iolani coach Eddie Hamada prioritized offense over defense and both units benefitted. Hamada gave John Stephens his first start at quarterback and Iolani shocked Kamehameha 24-0. Stephens started at linebacker through the Raiders’ 0-5 start to the ILH season and sprinkled in some action at quarterback in relief of Kaala Shea. He passed for a touchdown and ran for another in his first start, lofting a 25-yard pass to Michael Pila for a touchdown on […]
