On this date in 1982, Pearl City Sandy Obra just absolutely refused to give up. Obra directed his quarterbacks to put up 42 passes but Waianae stole 10 of them in a 41-7 victory for the Seariders in front of 3,966 at Aloha Stadium. The 10 picks set an OIA record established by Kahuku against Farrington way back in 1973. On this date in 1928, William Centeio of McKinley paid the price for raising a few too many eyebrows. Centeio recovered three fumbles to lead the Tigers over Saint Louis 7-6 three days before. The Crusaders were tipped off that Centeio, who had been playing for the Tigers for years and was still a student at the public school, was older than the league mandated 21. They also note the success of properly-administrated fall sports in states like Utah and Idaho, where football and girls volleyball resumed on schedule. The wait continues, but there is light at the end of this tunnel. The Hawaii High School Athletic Association is expected to release its updated sports calendar soon. How soon depends on the Department of Health, but the HHSAA’s sports calendar committee has essentially dotted its i’s and crossed its t’s. “The schedule is tentative and a work in progress.
