On this date in 1941, the Punahou and Saint Louis football teams were stranded on other islands when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor took place. Saint Louis beat the Kauai Army team 39-0 in Lihue behind Herman Wedemeyer the day before the attack and was primed to take on a combined Kekaha and Waimea team on Sunday. On this date in 2004, Kamehameha won its first state football championship. The Warriors have collected plenty of Prep Bowls, the last in 1976, but Kamehameha beat Leilehua 28-7 in front of a crowd of 17,757 for its first modern title. On this date in 2000, Kahuku finally struck a blow for the OIA against the ILH. Kahuku stunned nationally-ranked Saint Louis 26-0 in front of 14,267 at Aloha Stadium to win the second state championship. On this date in 1903, Kamehameha had nothing left to play for but still produced a victory. The Warriors, who won the football title a week earlier, beat the High School (now McKinley) 10-0 on the Punahou campus. The teams took turns fumbling the ball to each other in the first half. On this date in 2004, Preston Medeiros snuck in from a year out with 9.2 seconds left to lead Lahainaluna to a 41-34 win over Mililani in the state tournament at War Memorial Stadium. Lahainaluna needed to travel 65 yards in 1:35 to keep its season going. On this date in 1944, the Farrington Governors won their first football title. The Governors had clinched the championship weeks earlier, but made it official with a 33-0 win over Punahou in front of 5,000 fans at Honolulu Stadium. Farrington finished the season with a perfect record. In a reminder of what we are missing, on this date last year Kalei Akagi popped two big scores and Leilehua beat Baldwin 34-7 in the opening round of the state tournament at War Memorial Stadium.
