Quietly, they have toiled and sweat on the grassy knolls and fields of Kapolei and Ma‘ili. When Coach Mose Tuia came home with his MBC Athletics football team, they already notched a first. The club played two games in a three-game span, falling to California club powerhouse Winner Circle Athletics, 14-0, and defeating a combined team of PTP Sports and San Bernardino Elite players, 21-14, in double overtime. “The trip was very fun. I slept most of the time. I […]

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2021

There’s nothing quite like the smell of synthetic turf, rubber granules and Baden footballs in the air. When practice resumed at Alexander Field on Monday, seniors Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen and Kahanu Kia had all their prayers answered. “It’s just good to be back, be on the field, smell it again. It was nice. I was a beautiful day just playing football, seeing my teammates,” said Kia, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker. At Kalaepohaku, Saint Louis is in new-normal mode. In other words, […]

California opened high school football for the spring season, resulting in a flood of talent returning to school teams. Playing in an club exhibition during school season is not […]

The football showcase set for Mar. 16 against Winner Circle Athletics was already much-needed good news for TD’s small tribe of trench men. Their numbers grew with tryouts to fill out the squad to 35 or 40 players. The daily workouts never stopped, and as scholarship offers to players old and new have risen, so has the Dawgz’ cache. One of […]

Move to Tier 3 could have impact on ILH decisions for spring and postponed sports

By Paul Honda on February 25, 2021

There are possibilities under Tier 3 that didn’t exactly exist in Tier 2 for Oahu’s youth and high school athletes. The executive order was officially approved by Gov. David Ige on Thursday morning, 12:01 a.m. The move into a more lenient and flexible tier — for the first time since the pandemic forced closure of schools last March — means organized youth and high school sports have a stronger chance of returning for spring season. That includes football and girls […]
