Mililani speedster Gavin Hunter shines at Poly Bowl Combine

By Paul Honda on July 17, 2021

Only two athletes ran the 40-yard dash in an electronically-timed 4.4 seconds at the Polynesian Bowl Combine last weekend. One of them was Mililani wide receiver Gavin Hunter, who later finished the seven-hour event with co-MVP honors at his position. “I’m feeling good right now. We were with Coach Galu (Tagovailoa) getting that morning session,” the 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior said. It was scorching hot at Skippa Diaz Stadium in the morning. Afternoon trade winds soothed the 50-plus pass catchers as […]

Leilehua’s Keawe Andres rises to Poly Bowl Combine honors

By Paul Honda on July 16, 2021

Coaches at the receiver position got their look, hours worth of reps, at the Polynesian Bowl Combine on Saturday. By the end of 7-on-7 competition, nearly seven hours after the day had started, Leilehua senior Keawe Andres stood before his peers. The 5-foot-10, 167-pound pass catcher was named one of the top five players at his spot, one of five co-MVPs. The pronouncement in the announcement was slightly puzzling. “They said ‘No. 161, Kiwi Annndrez,’ ” Andres recalled. His confusion […]

Pearl City’s Josh Gleason rises to challenge at Poly Bowl Combine

By Paul Honda on July 14, 2021

Josh Gleason is quietly relentless. The Pearl City pass catcher made play after play, earning co-MVP honors at the Polynesian Bowl Combine on Saturday. The selections were made by the position coaches, the top five receivers out of a field of more than 50. “I like the fact that he was stepping up to the plate,” receivers coach Samson Anguay said. “Our Pearl City coaches do a great job. Josh is very deceiving, a tall kid with speed, but you […]

Damien’s diamond in the rough: LB Kahiau Young

By Paul Honda on July 14, 2021

Bringing the best of the best together for the Polynesian Bowl Combine was equal parts fun and competition. Kahiau Young had, perhaps, even more motivation. The Damien senior was one of five linebackers named co-MVP at the position after the long day was done at Skippa Diaz Stadium. Leonard Ah You, Kruze Keanu and Liona Lefau of Kahuku, and Alika Cavaco-Amoy of Punahou were also selected out of 48 linebackers. “Leonard and Liona, I think they’re (rated) four stars in […]

Grind won’t stop for ex-Saber, current Trojan WR Kanoa Ferreira

By Paul Honda on July 11, 2021

Freshman year for most student-athletes is a time of foundational work. Getting acclimated. Learning the ropes. For Kanoa Ferreira, it was a bit more than that. Ferreira was selected as one of the top five receivers at the Polynesian Bowl Combine on Saturday at Skippa Diaz Stadium, a rare feat for a playmaker this young. The other selections at WR were Keawe Andres of Leilehua, Gavin Hunter of Mililani, Kaden Baptista (Villa Park, Konawaena) and Joshua Gleason of Pearl City. […]

Kekahi Graham’s summer fun continues with QB honors at Poly Bowl Combine

By Paul Honda on July 11, 2021

Kekahi Graham is having a summer blast, earning top-five quarterback honors on Saturday at the Polynesian Bowl Combine at Skippa Diaz Stadium. “I was trying to go out there and compete. It was a good experience with John (Keawe Sagapolutele), Jarin (Sagapolutele), Kini (McMillan) and Mana (Tarape),” Graham said. “It’s an honor to get an award from Polynesian Bowl Combine. It’s a great camp. I had a lot of fun. Hopefully, I can get selected as a participant for the […]

Kaden Baptista’s journey from Konawaena to Cali to WR honors at Poly Bowl Combine

By Paul Honda on July 11, 2021

Kaden Baptista is not the usual valedictorian candidate. With his curly, bleached blonde hair and earrings, the two-sport athlete looks more like an artist than a perfectionist. There are, however, goals. Many goals. The former Konawaena student-athlete took a step toward his dream, to play college football, by earning honors as one of the top five wide receivers at the Polynesian Bowl Combine on Saturday at Skippa Diaz Stadium. Though he doesn’t lack any confidence, the selection surprised Baptista. “I […]

Fire still burns brightly for Coach Galu Tagovailoa

By Paul Honda on July 11, 2021

Much was asked of the young campers. Much was given in return. When the wind arrived after a boiling-hot morning on the turf of Skippa Diaz Stadium, so did a light sprinkle. Just in time for 7-on-7 battles. By 2:30 p.m., six hours of combine work — plus lunch — were in the books at the Polynesian Bowl Combine. For Galu Tagovailoa, there is nothing quite like being back home — and coaching quarterbacks. The former Ewa Beach Sabers coach […]
