Noah Bartley breaks out big for Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on August 28, 2021

Noah Bartley made a big splash on Friday. The Kamehameha running back was a force with 118 rushing yards on 20 carries, and six receptions for 133 yards against a stellar Punahou defense. Bartley scored two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough in a last-minute, 33-28 loss to the Buffanblu at Aloha Stadium. “Whoever the running back was, he did a very good job,” Punahou coach Nate Kia said. “He’s a very good runner.” No matter what Punahou drew up defensively, […]

By Paul Honda on August 28, 2021

So many new names, brilliant moments and yet, no, none quite as pristine as John-Keawe Sagapolutele. The junior brought something new to the turf at Aloha Stadium after nearly two years without an official high school game. The run threat. Sagapolutele passed for 381 yards and three touchdowns, completing 28 of his 41 attempts without an interception as Punahou rallied for a thrilling 33-28 win over Kamehameha on Friday night to open the ILH regular season. “I just feel like […]

By Paul Honda on August 27, 2021

(11 a.m. Adds feedback from Saint Louis coach Ron Lee.) Most fans are simply happy that there are high school football games this fall. But without set regular-season dates between OIA and ILH teams for the first time in years, there is a void for those fans. Kamehameha-Farrington? Saint Louis-Mililani? Kahuku-Punahou? Nothing has materialized yet, but with the OIA’s new fall sports schedule released just one day ago, the potential for matchups — exhibition contests — seems possible. Coaches say […]

Coaches react to new OIA fall sports schedule

By Paul Honda on August 27, 2021

There was a season, and there will be a season. When the state put public high school sports on hold on O, there was a collective silent scream of agony for athletes and coaches. Then, the private-school ILH announced its plan to carry on with fall sports. More silent screaming, at least for public-school parents and athletes. The OIA’s announcement of a new fall sports schedule — girls volleyball begins matches on Oct. 12, football games start on Oct. 15 […]

The Hawaii Baptist Academy Athletics Twitter page announced the cancellation. The game was scheduled to be on Friday, 5 p.m., at Aloha Stadium. No explanation was given for the decision, but athletic programs and schools continue to operate tight protocols regarding exposure to the COVID-19 virus. Dealing with quarantines is simply a part of the new normal. “Much respect […]

Tevarua Tafiti, John-Keawe Sagapolutele return for powerhouse Punahou

By Paul Honda on August 26, 2021

For several years now, Punahou’s defensive unit has been in lockdown mode. During Saint Louis’ 35-game win streak against teams in Hawaii, Punahou had the best shot to stun the Crusaders because of defense. That tone and tenor will not change a bit with defensive coordinator Nate Kia now the head coach. Elite prospect Tevarua Tafiti, a defensive end/linebacker, committed to Stanford. The talented playmaker has 19 scholarship offers, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Virginia. Defensive end Kielan Siamani […]
