By Paul Honda on September 25, 2021

The earth trembled, the dark clouds parted and, for the first time since 2013, Kamehameha has a football victory over Saint Louis. Kamehameha’s stunning 23-21 win over the four-time Open Division state champion Crusaders was a long time coming. Saint Louis had not lost a game in Hawaii since 2016, a 36-game win streak that began after a midseason loss to Punahou. “Our guys executed. Our coaches did an incredible job of getting ready from a game plan standpoint and […]

Agent HYBRID 01, one of seven such defenders listed as such on the Raiders’ roster. The six football teams in Division I of the Oahu Interscholastic Association will open their schedule on Oct. 22, one week later than originally planned. Saturday morning in the lo‘i for Kamehameha I-AA Warriors

By Paul Honda on September 23, 2021

Two games into the ILH football season, one of the youngest teams in the league went outside the box on a bye weekend. The Kamehameha I-AA squad emerged wiser and muddier for their effort. “During the bye week, we came together as a team to work in the lo‘i in Heeia. They were thick in the mud weeding and preparing the lo‘i for kalo planting. It was a unique way to serve, to get a workout and to bond as […]

By Paul Honda on September 21, 2021

Another day, another opportunity for Tevarua Tafiti. Win or lose, the Punahou senior relishes a chance to get better when his football team is on the turf at Alexander Field. Punahou’s 41-23 loss to No. 1 Saint Louis over the weekend did nothing to diminish the vision of Tafiti. “Yes, with having a young team there were a lot of mistakes, but we gave a lot of effort. We just need to execute more in the game,” the 6-foot-3, 225-pound […]

An elephant and more in Saint Louis’ bag of tricks, wrinkles

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2021

As ancient as the wheel, seemingly, the draw play still delivers a gut punch to the most dangerous and powerful defense. Saint Louis was in a quandary on Saturday afternoon as Punahou brought a mix of blitz packages, bringing quarterback AJ Bianco down four times before intermission. Calling the draw didn’t end Punahou’s sack-cessful afternoon, but it created a 38-yard touchdown run by Trech Kekahuna and a 49-yard jaunt by Jaysen Peters-de Laura as Saint Louis went ahead 28-17 by […]

By Paul Honda on September 17, 2021

Whatever label fans give Saint Louis I-AA this fall doesn’t matter. Quarterback Jaron Sagapolutele and wide receiver Kache Kaio have one of the best connections in the state regardless of classification. Kaio, a 6 feet, 1 inch and 200 pounds, simply overwhelmed Damien’s secondary and caught touchdown passes of 24, 15 and 36 yards in the first half as the Crusaders stifled Damien, 34-14, on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. Saint Louis I-AA, comprised of freshmen and sophomores, had already […]
