The international flair of Waialua’s clutch win over McKinley

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2021

The difference between a silent bus ride and a boot-stomping return home to Waialua rested on the sturdy left foot of Lasse Stolten. The sophomore exchange student from Germany, playing in a football game for the first time in his life, connected on two field goals as Waialua rallied past McKinley, 15-13, in a thriller on Saturday night. “I’ve been here three months. I thought, I’ve got to make this for the team. It was a struggle, but also, like […]

Kamehameha in fourth week atop Football Top 10

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2021

Kamehameha’s clutch gene is alive and well. Coaches and media granted the Warriors 10 of 12 possible first-place votes in today’s Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. That makes it four weeks in a row with Kamehameha a No. 1 ranking, including the last three as an outright top-ranked team. Kamehameha rallied past Saint Louis, 34-31, on Friday to seal the top seed in the ILH Open Division playoffs. Kahuku won handily at Kapolei, 41-7, and rose from No. 4 to a […]

‘We’re built for this’ — No. 1 Kamehameha rallies past No. 2 Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2021

Like the wind, momentum is a fickle fiend one minute. A precious friend the next. Kamehameha’s second narrow in over Saint Louis in as many tries betrayed all kinds of trends and theories. After all, ILH sports and academics are all about immense and intense competition. Iron sharpens, but in ILH football, it is that shot to the gut, the solar plexus, that has defined the Open Division. Now, with a come-from-behind 34-31 win over Saint Louis, Kamehameha (3-1) can […]

The Oct. 20 timeline falls in line with the statewide mandate for loosening restrictions for outdoor and indoor events. Actual size of […]

Kaimuki forfeits football opener against Radford

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2021

The football season opener between Kaimuki and Radford has been forfeited by Kaimuki. The game had been scheduled for Saturday at Farrington’s Skippa Diaz Stadium. OIA football coordinator Harold Tanaka confirmed that a low number of eligible players is the reason for the forfeiture. In years past, the league generally has used 25 as a threshold number for small rosters. “They’re going to be fine,” Tanaka said. “It’s just this week.” New coach Reid Yoshikawa stepped in after the school […]

Jordan Helle on AJ Bianco: ‘He reminds me of Andrew Manley’

By Paul Honda on October 12, 2021

AJ Bianco seems so familiar. Tall, strong and composed in the pocket. Able to lead through adversity. Self-motivated. Self-analyzing. Always getting better. The Saint Louis quarterback is featured in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior is starting this fall for the first time, and four games in, his coaches and former coaches-turned-analysts have observed a consistent growth by the two-sport standout. Perhaps one of the most comparable of quarterbacks past is Jordan Helle, who led Baldwin during its dynasty […]

Kamehameha is No. 1 for a third week in a row

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2021

A bye week was a productive week for the Kamehameha Warriors on the field and in the rankings. The Warriors remained at No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10 for a third consecutive week, collecting a season-high nine first-place ballots from the panel of coaches and media. For the first time since 2016, Saint Louis did not receive a single No. 1 vote. The Crusaders remained at No. 2 for a second week in a row after edging No. […]

Kahuku impressive in first on-field action since 2019

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2021

Up front, it is all business for Kahuku. Coming into a scrimmage with No. 1-ranked Kamehameha, two offensive linemen went down with injuries. Next man up. Kahuku scored five touchdowns in five series during the modified scrimmage, mixing rollouts and two-back, shotgun power runs in a display of balance. Kamehameha played reserves from start to finish. The Warriors’ bye week was an opportunity to get some action for both those second- and third-stringers, while the visiting Red Raiders enjoyed their […]
