Former Maryknoll All-State POY Josh Burnett turns down overseas offers

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2020

Josh Burnett knows his A-B-Cs. Altitude. Buoyancy. Commitment. The Star-Advertiser 2014 boys basketball All-State player of the year also knows another ‘C’: Contentment. The 6-foot-4 wing played at four destinations on his life-after-high-school basketball map, earned a degree in psychology, and then turned down offers to play overseas. Burnett is employed by the U.S. Postal Service in St. Louis, Mo., earning his paycheck and enjoying peace of mind. “I might go back to get my master’s (degree) next year if […]

Maryknoll junior hoopster Sage Tolentino commits to Auburn

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2020

Maryknoll boys basketball standout Sage Tolentino gave an oral commitment to Auburn on Thursday morning. The 7-foot wing had received offers from Kansas, Tennessee State, then was offered by Auburn last week. On Wednesday, Cincinnati made an offer, but the talented sharpshooter made his decision less than 24 hours later. “My family and I have prayed about this day since I was a kid,” Tolentino wrote on social media. “I am beyond blessed and I give God all the glory. […]

Former Maryknoll hoopster Brian Washington considers 6 D-I offers

By Paul Honda on October 14, 2020

Freshman year at Maryknoll came to a heartbreaking end for center Brian Washington. After losing in the 2014 ILH playoffs, the 6-foot-8 center and teammate Justice Sueing Jr., the Spartans high-scoring sophomore, chatted outside the entrance door. Sueing had already spent some summer time jamming with Mater Dei, a California powerhouse. It was clear, even then, that if Washington and Sueing stuck together, Maryknoll would have the inside track to one, probably two state championships. “You better not leave,” Washington […]

Damien hires Keith Spencer as boys basketball coach

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2020

The road as a coach has been peaks and valleys for Keith Spencer, but this stop will be tough to top. Damien hired the former Leilehua and Saint Louis boys basketball coach, replacing Alvin Stephenson. The Monarchs won a Division II state title under Stephenson in 2018, then moved up to D-I and reached the D-I state tourney. Stephenson stepped down after last season. “I’m excited to come back and coach at the high school level again,” Spencer said. The […]

Auburn offers scholarship to Maryknoll hoopster Sage Tolentino

By Paul Honda on October 6, 2020

Sage Tolentino has something in common with Charles Barkley. The 7-foot Maryknoll junior received a scholarship offer from Auburn, Barkley’s alma mater, on Tuesday. This is his first offer from the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Kansas offered in early July and Tennessee State also offered in late August. “I am excited and feel so humbled to have received an offer from the SEC conference,” Tolentino said. “I have been in contact with them for awhile. Coach (Wes) Flanigan and (Head) Coach […]

Adventure time in the desert is underway for a new version of Hawaii’s fab five. Kordel Ng, Liko Soares, Nainoa Peters, Kamana Lapina and Ryan Owens are pursuing their hoop dreams. In Phoenix, Ariz., they live in a house together. Most of their time outside the house is spent practicing with Hillcrest Prep, a post-graduate program. Their days are spent in the gym, in the weight room and at home, often playing video games. The purpose for all five islanders […]

Saint Louis standout Aiva Arquette enjoying pro-level guidance

By Paul Honda on August 30, 2020

If he could live in two universes, free from a global pandemic, Aiva Arquette would play baseball in one and basketball in the other. Infinitely. Arquette’s rise on the diamond and the hardwood helped Saint Louis, and he was just a sophomore. Despite the ongoing lockdown, he is getting work done as junior year begins. He posted a video on social media last week, working on his catch-and-shoot elbow and 3-point jumpers with former ‘Iolani great Derrick Low. Earlier in […]

Kalaheo, UH-Hilo standout Kupaa Harrison signs with Spanish pro team

By Paul Honda on August 26, 2020

In another basketball world, Kupaa Harrison is 1.95 meters tall. The former UH-Hilo and Kalaheo standout signed with Usal La Antigua and will make his professional debut this fall in Salamanca, Spain. “I’m not in Spain yet, but I will be heading out there in the middle of September,” Harrison said on Wednesday morning. “Right now, I’m back on Oahu spending time with family and then I will be heading to California to try and get some proper training in.
