Neighbor island coaches hoping leagues buck trend of Oahu

By Paul Honda on January 4, 2021

Sometimes, even when outside pressure mounts, the neighbor islands go their own way. What that means for high school sports is that the Big Island, Maui and Kauai sometimes stand alongside their Oahu counterparts and, sometimes, though, they don’t. That was apparent at HIADA’s annual conferences in years past. Even when the two largest leagues, the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Interscholastic League of Honolulu clearly outnumbered the neighbor island leagues, the latter often stood with an opposing viewpoint — because […]

JAN 4, 2005: David Moore makes Kalaheo his team

By Jerry Campany on January 4, 2021

For much of his early prep basketball career, Kalaheo’s David Moore was known as a defensive stopper. But on this date in 2005, after starting since his sophomore year, he showed that he was going to be so much more for his senior season. Moore scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half and the Mustangs opened their league season with a 59-50 win over Castle. The Knights led by a point at halftime before Moore took off. […]

OIA makes it official: All winter sports cancelled

By Paul Honda on January 2, 2021

Winter is not coming to the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Less than three hours after the Hawaii High School Athletic Association canceled state tournaments for “Season 1”, the public-school OIA canceled its entire winter season sports calendar on Saturday. Season 1 includes some fall sports that had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic: air riflery, basketball, bowling, competitive cheer, cross country, paddling, soccer, swimming and diving, and wrestling. Winter is the busiest of the traditional three seasons in prep sports. […]

JAN 2, 1998: Kenji Price pours in 31 points for Mililani

By Jerry Campany on January 2, 2021

Mililani sharpshooter Kenji Price already knew how to complete a goal on this date in 1998. Price hit six 3-pointers and scored 31 points as Mililani opened its season with a 64-54 win over Waipahu. Price had plenty of other big games, being named the OIA West Player of the Year after the season. He had an interesting day during the OIA tournament in February, scoring 18 points in a semifinal loss to Kalaheo the same day he participated in […]

Saint Louis coach Dan Hale: Teams exploring ‘bubble’ scenario

By Paul Honda on December 29, 2020

Basketball teams in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu are already making secondary plans now that the league has cancelled hoops this season. With the league no longer directly responsible for basketball this winter — the ILH announced cancellation of five winter sports on Monday — programs could “bubble” together and schedule home-and-away games to make up for the lack of an official basketball campaign. It would be somewhat similar to the way teams schedule preseason games with each other, with […]

A boy and his ball: Hard work earns respect from former Clemson player

By Paul Honda on December 25, 2020

On an empty football field, or a quiet basketball court, a 10-year-old boy grinds through each drill with complete focus. The ladder footwork. The drop back. The spirals. His father watches quietly, occasionally directing him to the next obstacle. On the asphalt court, the cones are set. The son weaves through them. The ballhandling has improved, day after day, week after week. Early in the morning or late in the afternoon, they make the time. Jared Manti Dudoit has learned […]

Life after Kahuku: Tolu Smith thriving at Mississippi State

By Paul Honda on December 24, 2020

There was a time when Tolu Smith dreamed of donning the white and green of the University of Hawaii. Fate steered the 6-foot-9 Kahuku hoopster in a different direction. Now a sophomore at Mississippi State, the now 6-10 Smith is averaging 14 points and nine rebounds per game for the Bulldogs. “It’s been a tough journey in all honesty. I knew personally what I wanted to accomplish and still want to accomplish to this day, but it hasn’t been the […]

Poll: Coaches optimistic about bowling, swimming, less so on wrestling

By Paul Honda on December 15, 2020

Finality is not here, not quite yet in the strange year of 2020. While vaccines for the COVID-19 virus are being flown across the country, high school sports in Hawaii remain on hold. Leagues are waiting on bated breath for word — and approval — from the Department of Health. Coaches across the state are optimistic about the chances for outdoor sports like soccer and swimming/diving, according to a Hawaii Prep World poll. Eighteen winter-sport coaches, roughly half of those […]
