Transformer: Punahou’s Ryder Hsiung muscles up before heading to Willamette

By Paul Honda on March 23, 2021

The extra effort has defined Ryder Hsiung on and off the basketball court. Not even a global pandemic could change the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Punahou senior. Hsiung signed with Willamette University, which will get the benefit of the sharpshooter’s marksmanship. As a junior in 2019-20, he had his best scoring output against Saint Louis, splashing six 3-pointers en route to a 24-point performance. Before the game, when Coach Darren Matsuda opened the gym door at 2:30 p.m. for early shooting reps, […]

By Paul Honda on March 7, 2021

A four-team tournament was held at Maui Prep last month, played by club teams with players from Lahainaluna, Baldwin, Maui and host Maui Prep. Oahu teams, mostly private schools or clubs comprised of private and public school players, played a modest number of games in the latter half of February. Saint Louis was 13-0 in exhibition play, while Damien played several exhibition games and scrimmages. On the Big Island, Kamehameha-Hawaii […]

Saint Louis closes exhibition basketball play 13-0 with win over Le Jardin

By Paul Honda on February 27, 2021

Dan Hale lost track of exactly how much sanitizer his Saint Louis Crusaders used in the past five weeks. Gallons, he says. Gallon after gallon. But the number of exhibition wins in this COVID-19 pandemic school year is memorable: 13, without a loss. The Crusaders’ quest for basketball action came to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 76-43 win over Le Jardin at Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Center. Their big men, Aiva Arquette and AJ Bianco, scored 19 points […]

In the second game, ‘Iolani’s girls pulled away for a 62-40 win over the Warrior wahine. Kamehameha had a senior-day celebration for the girls after the […]

Kamehameha is good. ‘Iolani is simply off the chart. AJ Bianco’s 23/10 powers Saint Louis past Tar Heels BC, 63-52

By Paul Honda on February 24, 2021

AJ Bianco has one question. “When is football going to start?” The 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback has been raring to go since the sport was postponed last fall by the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. In the meantime, as Saint Louis’ powerful post on the hardwood, Bianco came up big on Wednesday night with 23 points, 10 rebounds and four assists as the Crusaders withstood a gritty effort by Tar Heels Basketball Club for a 63-52 win. Saint Louis improved to 11-0 […]

By Paul Honda on February 23, 2021

Paliku Kamaka scored 13 points and Onipa‘a Pung scored five of his 10 points in the final quarter as Kamehameha rallied from an eight-point deficit for a 55-53 win over Punahou in exhibition basketball action on Tuesday at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. “It was more focus on what each responsibility was. If they all focus on what they need to do offensively and defensively, then the end result is a little better,” Warriors Coach Larry Park said. “Punahou, we have good games […]

Tonight, Hanalani’s girls team visits Kamehameha, and the Warrior boys host Punahou after that in an exhibition doubleheader at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium. Both games will be streamed online, no spectators allowed. Saint Louis closes out “Season 1” with three games: Tar Heels on Wednesday, Le Jardin on Thursday and Punahou on Friday. The Punahou game will be the first against an official school team […]
