By Paul Honda on January 5, 2022

From Larry Park to Dunn Muramaru, basketball and baseball coaches rave at Aiva Arquette, who is this week’s featured high school student-athlete in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Saint Louis senior is aware of his impact on the hardwood and the diamond. He just doesn’t seem affected by the attention whether it comes from coaches, media or fans. Even his perspective about the weight room — Arquette has gained roughly 20-25 pounds of muscle since sophomore year — is […]

Buffanblu coach Darren Matsuda said he will meet with school administrators to consider options for the remainder of the tournament. Several teams have players in health and safety protocols. Two teams, Matsuda said, have withdrawn from the tournament. The recently-completed James Alegre Invitational and ‘Iolani Classic tournaments had numerous game cancellations due to health […]

Post-game immaturity marks Sierra Canyon’s well-earned ‘Iolani Classic crown

By Paul Honda on December 23, 2021

Dug McDaniel swallowed his pride. Moments after he missed two contested 3-point tries in the final seconds of a 52-49 loss to national powerhouse Sierra Canyon, the St. Paul VI guard felt the sting. When Sierra Canyon let him know that the win was theirs, waving goodbye, he fired back verbally at mid-court. As they headed back to their bench, Mike Price, Dylan Metoyer, Justin Pippen and Addison Reid wore their white Sierra Canyon uniforms proudly and continued to wave […]

Hoopbook: Rashawn Fritz-Betiru’s 36 rallies Kaimuki, Kohala sweeps mini-tourney in Hilo

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2021

When Kaimuki fell behind 36-15 at Radford on Saturday night, coach Greydon Espinda didn’t have a lot of words for his team at the break. His team was playing fairly good defense. Shots weren’t falling. There was still 16 minutes to play. “It got worse. (The lead) was in the mid-20s,” Espinda said of the point margin. “I just told them play as a team, not as individuals, and they did that in the whole second half. It’s about playing […]

Straight outta the DMV: St. Paul VI loves defense, winning and malasadas

By Paul Honda on December 22, 2021

Defense is still cool. Really. Though social media is filled with ankle-breakers and outlandish dunks, the best of the best still dig down and play great team defense. When No. 1 Sierra Canyon and No. 20 St. Paul VI (Va.) square up on Wednesday for the ‘Iolani Classic title, there will be toe-to-toe defensive prowess on both ends of the floor. For three games, each of the powerhouse squads has played the kind of man-to-man defense that old-schoolers relish. The […]
