Senior-heavy ‘Iolani loaded with college talent

By Paul Honda on April 13, 2021

At ‘Iolani, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Nobody knows this better than baseball coach Kurt Miyahira. The Raiders’ baseball diamond is now the site of a giant tent that covers tables and chairs. Concrete sits on the once pristine playing field, providing a safe environment outdoors for ‘Iolani’s student body. The Raiders have made do by working out in their batting cages and on small sections of grass on their outfield. “We use what […]

By Paul Honda on April 13, 2021

By Mid-Pacific baseball standards, there’s some catching up to do. The Owls open regular-season play on Tuesday afternoon against ‘Iolani as longtime coach Dunn Muramaru ponders what will happen. The cancellation of the 2020 season disrupted the force, for sure. “We play our season, raise our level. In the fall, raise our level,” Muramaru said about the gaps that never happened in his decades of coaching. “Now, we’re back to where we would be in the summer. That’s the hardest […]

The much-needed permits to conduct games at state and city and county venues are in hand, which means the ILH can play at key sites: CORP, Ala Wai Community Park and Goeas Field. At CORP, Pac-Five and Damien play in a […]

Blending in: Mililani baseball set to return to diamond soon

By Paul Honda on March 15, 2021

Depending on whether your public high school is in blended model mode or not, spring sports are closer to returning in the Oahu Interscholastic Association. One of the largest schools in the state, Mililani, is not in the blended learning category, which means conditioning is more than one week away, according to Trojans Baseball Coach Mark Hirayama. “Our school’s blended model begins on the 29th. I think we’re going to be able to start on the 22nd with our conditioning […]

It is not quite official yet, but a spring sports regular season is likely in the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Athletic directors voted for the format on Monday, and schedules are not complete. The vote could be formalized by the league soon. Getting to step one is next. “We haven’t heard anything final or official. We are all trying to finalize our own schools’ practice plans and work on step one before the next,” McKinley Athletic Director Bob Morikuni said. The […]

By Paul Honda on March 8, 2021

It’s not quite the end-all yet, but the 46-page “Return To Learn” guide produced by the Hawaii Department of Education provides details and layers — phases — for a return to the classrooms and fields for high school student-athletes. As of today (Monday), pubic-school baseball and softball coaches are expecting to start conditioning workouts on Mar. 29, though it is not written in stone. Oahu is in Tier 3 and could ramp up to Tier 4 by Mar. 25, according […]
