Loyola Marymount senior Codie Paiva, a 2015 Kamehameha alumnus, was selected by the Miami Marlins in the 22nd round (No. 651 overall) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday. The 6-foot-5 right-hander was named the West Coast Conference pitcher of the year this season. He finished the year 8-5 with a 1.91 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings. Within two hours, there were more than 100 texts and a whole lot of calls on Shane Sasaki‘s phone. That’s the life of a future professional baseball player. The Tampa Bay Rays made Sasaki their third-round selection, the No. 99 pick, in the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. The ‘Iolani senior batted .565 with 26 RBIs and 26 runs scored as a senior, and was voted to the Star-Advertiser All-State team.

‘Iolani’s Micah Yonamine was chosen as the Gatorade Hawaii Baseball Player of the Year, the Gatorade Company announced Thursday. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.
