ON THIS DATE: Pearl City baseball team stays perfect

By Jerry Campany on March 30, 2020

The only bad thing about a long winning streak is that it is bound to end sometime. On this date in 1991, the Pearl City baseball team overcame a three-run deficit to beat Mililani 6-3 to win the OIA West with a perfect 10-0 record.  Brent Furuyama won his fourth game of the season by allowing seven hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Chad Oshiro and Chance Sing Chow paired hits and John Aiken drove in two runs, one of them […]

ON THIS DATE: Arthur Oshita helps Kaimuki to big lead in OIA East

By Jerry Campany on March 29, 2020

As a rare four-year starting pitcher, Kaimuki’s Arthur Oshita was denied his chance to win an OIA or state championship as a senior. On this day in 1975, Oshita appeared to be well on his way with a 3-2 win over Kalani. The victory moved the Bulldogs two full games ahead of the field in the OIA East with a 9-1 record.  Oshita allowed six hits in the complete game, striking out eight Falcons and only walking one. His defense committed […]

ON THIS DATE: Frank Manalili puts clamps on Ka’u

By Jerry Campany on March 26, 2020

It appears coaches on the Big Island were ahead of their time as far as analytics go. On this day in 1963, St. Joseph pitcher Frank Manalili limited Ka’u to a single hit in a 7-2 victory. It was one of three wins for the senior, against four losses, but he was still judged the best right-handed pitcher at the end of the season. In the pivotal South Division of the BIIF, Manalili helped deal the Cowboys their first loss, […]

ON THIS DATE: Kamehameha beats McKinley in 25 innings

By Jerry Campany on March 25, 2020

Perhaps nobody told McKinley’s Martin Borja that baseball games are not supposed to go 25 innings. On this date in 1967, Kamehameha beat McKinley 9-7 in 25 innings at Honolulu Stadium. Borja pitched 24 2/3 innings in the six hour, 12-minute affair only to lose. He faced more than 100 batters in the game, allowing 14 hits and walking 11. McKinley committed 10 errors, so Borja allowed only four earned runs in his 25 2/3 innings. The effort is still […]

ON THIS DATE: Nathan Aipa leads Iolani to upset of Saint Louis

By Jerry Campany on March 23, 2020

From its inception in 1909 to the present day, every game during the ILH baseball season seems to matter.  Iolani’s Nathan Aipa struggled on the mound but made up for it with his bat as the Raiders knocked Saint Louis from the unbeaten ranks on this date in 1972. Aipa went the opposite way for a single to score Howard Araki and Dean Okimoto in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Raiders upset Saint Louis 9-8 at ‘Iolani’s […]

Red Raiders alum Spencer Yates is the new Kauai High baseball coach

By Nick Abramo on March 23, 2020

On a smaller scale, it’s comparable to the NFL’s Manning family. The athletic line of mostly quarterbacks went from Archie down to Cooper (wide receiver), Peyton and Eli. On Kauai, you’ve got two who made the show as Major League Baseball pitchers —Tyler and Kirby Yates — but there is another baseball player in the family. Spencer Yates, born between the other two, is the new Kauai High baseball coach, and Tyler is his pitching coach. Unfortunately, baseball is on […]

ON THIS DATE: Radford’s Reed Anderson makes himself known

By Jerry Campany on March 22, 2020

On this date in 1986, Radford’s Reed Anderson did his best to ensure a newspaper would never spell his name wrong again. Anderson climbed the mound at Aloha Stadium and shut out Mililani over nine innings, only to wake up to find his first name misspelled in the Honolulu Advertiser’s account of the game.  Anderson and batterymate Raul Benitez limited Mililani to two hits and two walks, striking out seven. The only times the Trojans cracked him were a first-inning […]

Q&A: Saint Louis pitcher/shortstop JT Navyac

By Paul Honda on March 17, 2020

He’s not just an infielder, not just a pitcher, not just a ball player. JT Navyac isn’t even just a utility guy. He is now an ace on the mound, a multiple-tool athlete, the kind that every baseball manager — he will play at Cal State Fullerton next season — needs on a successful roster. After a four-hit shutout win over Punahou last week, Navyac returned to his customary spot at shortstop as the Crusaders defeated Maryknoll on Saturday to […]
