They fell short, but two years later the Monarchs made it all the way to the Division II state title game before a loss to Kauai and won it all the next year. Cabbab was one year short of seeing his dream realized. Damien began playing baseball […]

You could see it coming. On this day in 1952, Frank Reveira collected three hits and drove in four runs as Saint Louis beat McKinley 19-1 in an ILH baseball game. Reviera, a freshman catcher, had sportswriters and scouts all atwitter over his future, with the Star-Bulletin’s Carl Machado writing that Reviera ‘is destined to become one of the Crusaders’ all-time greats.’ Reveira proved Machado right, in a sense, being named first-team ILH for the first three seasons of his […]

By Jerry Campany on April 12, 2020

On this day in 1955, the big stage didn’t faze the tiny Pahala baseball team. Pahala traveled to Honolulu Stadium over Easter break to take on three ILH teams before hitting Maui on the way back for two more games. The Trojans raised more than a few eyebrows in Honolulu, beating Saint Louis 10-1 behind Andres Deperino‘s pitching and the hitting of Felimon Sesson. Sesson hit a ball halfway up the centerfield bleachers. Pahala beat Mid-Pacific 6-5 the next day […]

By Jerry Campany on April 12, 2020

On this date in 1909, the ILH locked down a schedule for its first official baseball season. Punahou ended up winning the circuit, and repeated in 1910, but the thing that had fans most excited was the parity. The final contest, won by Punahou over Kamehameha in 11 innings, continued a theme of close games that was lauded by both newspapers, which pointed out that the only blowout came after the race was decided and McKinley played some younger boys. […]
