Kalihi kids ‘Go Nuts’ during barnstorming tour in Northwest

Somewhere tucked between the pastures and lakes of Oregon and Washington, a baseball club from the islands is going nuts. The Go Nuts squad, comprised of players from Farrington, Kamehameha and other schools, has made the best of a precarious time by traveling to the Northwest. The newest class of the Hall of Honor was selected on Sunday, awarding each athlete a $2,000 scholarship from Enterprise. >> Nanea Estrella, Lahainaluna She is a four-time state champion in wrestling, the sixth girl in state history to do so and the second from Maui, joining Lahainaluna’s Lalelei Mataafa from 2016. MAY 9, 1955: Kaimuki’s George Hamasaki hits for cycle

On this day in 1955, Kaimuki and Roosevelt tested the limits of someone’s scorebook. The teams wrapped up the season by combining for 29 hits, 10 errors and nine walks in the Bulldogs’ 16-11 victory in two and a half hours. George Hamasaki was the big stick for Kaimuki, hitting for the cycle and driving in six runs. In all, the Bulldogs erupted for 22 hits.

Baseball nearly every day couldn’t untie the knot in the OIA West. On this date in 2001, Shawn Benson threw a complete game and Pearl City beat Mililani 5-2 to cause a five-way tie for second place in the West. Campbell was the class of the group at 8-1. Mililani, Aiea, Pearl City, Waianae and Leilehua all finished 6-3 to leave OIA baseball coordinator Keith Morioka grasping at straws to figure out which three of the five would move on […]

MAY 7, 1957: Dan Kashiwamura leads potent Iolani attack

On this date in 1957, Iolani’s powerful offense brought Punahou back down to earth. Dan Kashiwamura had three hits and the Raiders scored seven runs in the third inning to beat the Buffanblu 10-6. The loss dropped Punahou into a three-way tie for first with Mid-Pacific and McKinley. Jimmy Doole and Punahou recovered to win the league for the third straight year. Kashiwamura grew up to become a successful coach at Farrington.

On this day in 1914, the Kamehameha baseball team looked unbeatable. Mills College proved otherwise. Denichi Takeuchi provided the highlight of the 5-2 upset, stealing third and home to provide the telling run. Takeuchi grew up to become an influential person in Japan, taking that country’s Olympic team on a tour of the Americas. On this day in 1988, Michael Kato and Waianae eased into the second round of the state tournament with a no-hitter over five innings. The Seariders won 4-0 in five innings when the game was called because of rain. The short outing didn’t help Kato in semifinals, though, as he got roughed up by Kamehameha for eight runs on seven hits (including two home runs) before the fourth inning. On this day in 1994, Waiakea ace Onan Masaoka stuck out 11 batters in five innings but hit the wall and Kalaheo won 7-1. Jesse Brown won the mound dual for the Mustangs and Alika Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brown allowed just four hits.
