Saint Louis junior Aiva Arquette commits to Cal Poly

By Paul Honda on October 29, 2020

Aiva Arquette is set on the future, thanks in part to a St. Louis Cardinals legend. The Saint Louis junior shortstop committed to Cal Poly, ending the recruiting war for one of the state’s most promising prospects. “It feels awesome to commit. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity especially during this time. I enjoyed the process, but it was stressful. It feels good to know where I am going to college for the next four years,” Arquette said. “My parents feel grateful […]

Iron and haircuts at Tui Ickes’ ‘Tokelau Pit’

By Paul Honda on October 17, 2020

Tui Ickes knows his way with a tool in his hands. The 6-foot, 197-pound senior brought skill and power to the plate for the Kamehameha Warriors last spring, hitting .515 in 37 plate appearances — preseason and two ILH games — with a slugging percentage of .667. Two home runs and three doubles helped bring 10 runs home for Ickes. His versatility is another tool. Ickes plays third base, first base and the outfield. “He’s got some enormous strength and […]

Kamehameha infielder Jameson Hussey caps busy offseason

By Paul Honda on October 15, 2020

Quietly, Jameson Hussey has gone about his business. The Kamehameha corner man — he plays first base and third base — batted 4-for-9 for Team Hawaii in the Arizona Senior Fall Classic over the weekend. That caps a fun baseball escape in an otherwise bleak COVID-19 pandemic that cut the spring high school season short. “I enjoyed facing new competition because it feels like we play the same people over and over again here in Hawaii. To face different competition […]

Kamehameha slugger, UH commit Pa‘a Elarionoff enjoying diamond life

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2020

The glove is often golden, and the bat is smoking hot. By Pa‘a Elarionoff’s standards, however, a weekend in the Arizona Junior Fall Classic wasn’t peak-performance level at the plate. Playing third base for Team Hawaii, he kept his focus on the squad. “I wish I could say I had a great tournament, but statistically, it’s not something to brag about. My bat seems to be sleepy,” he said from Arizona. “My dad (Grad) always says to contribute something no […]

Saint Louis junior Aiva Arquette continues power surge in LA, Arizona

By Paul Honda on October 10, 2020

Baseball has been very, very good to Aiva Arquette. When the two-sport standout wasn’t firing up jump shots with Coach Derrick Low during the summer, Arquette was getting constant reps on the diamond. The 6-foot-3 junior added some game action to his offseason calendar, socking a home run with Team Hawaii at the Arizona Junior Fall Classic. Junior Fall Classic 2020. ‘Iolani fireballer Zacary Tenn is smokin’ hot in Arizona

By Paul Honda on October 9, 2020

It was smokin’ hot in Arizona last weekend, and the weather was a scorcher, too. ‘Iolani right-hander Zacary Tenn provided the heat at the Arizona Junior Fall Classic. The junior brought a fastball timed at 87 mph to help TB SoCal, coached by Benny Bonilla and Ryan Thompson. “My favorite highlight was just being able to pitch because back home, we haven’t had any games in a while,” said Tenn, who will also pitch in the Arizona Senior Fall Classic […]

Saint Louis junior Taven Hathaway overpowers mainland foes

By Paul Honda on October 8, 2020

The grind has been good to Taven Hathaway. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound junior from Saint Louis has kept working, throwing, hitting, fielding since day one of the first COVID-19 lockdown on Oahu. The right-hander got some action at the Hawaii Sandlot Classic in August. Last weekend, he played with Team Hawaii in the HeadFirst Academic Showcase and Junior Fall Classic. In the Fall Classic, he was 4-for-5 at the plate with two walks and was hit by pitch once. He pitched […]

Grandfather, little brother on trip of lifetime for Beau Sylvester

By Paul Honda on October 7, 2020

Beau Sylvester knows the long way around the baseball diamond well. That’s why a road trip with his 6-year-old brother, Gage, and 77-year-old grandfather, Jim, was the sweet spot of all journeys this fall. Sylvester, an outfielder-catcher at Kamehameha, gave his support crew a thrill or two for the generations. He hit a home run and threw out a baserunner from the outfield, and finished 4-for-6 at the plate during Arizona Junior Fall Classic play with his teams, Team Hawaii […]
