This is one of those feel-good stories.
Aaron Souza, a 6-foot-2 senior guard for the Kahuku Red Raiders, has played sparingly this year. But he got into the team’s state-tournament first-round 72-40 victory over Konawaena on Wednesday night and played a memorable few minutes in mop-up time.
Souza went 1-for-3 from the field for two points and grabbed a defensive rebound in three minutes on the floor.
His teammates and coaches and Red Raiders fans cheered loudly when he scored from in the paint before he bounced a free throw off the rim in an attempt to finish a three-point play.
“He’s like our hype man,” senior teammate Hirkley Latu said about Souza. “He gets us hyped before the game. It was good fun seeing him play because he hadn’t played in a while.”
Souza said he was a bit bummed about missing the free throw.
“I was 4-for-4 this season before that,” he said. “I really wanted to make it. Now I can’t end the season perfect at the line.”
