Kaiser’s relay team eyes another record

Only one more record remains. The Kaiser girls 4×400-meter relay team is eyeing the state meet record of 3 minutes, 57.47 seconds. The foursome of Tommi Hintnaus, Celine Lum, Kristen O’Handley and Teuila Gardner broke the OIA championship meet record on Saturday with a time of 4:00.43. Leilehua’s Jerri Malyuo won the girls long jump and triple jump. Her teammate Ky’Yonna Chapman repeated as 100 hurdles champion. Kaiser’s Celine Lum broke the OIA record in the girls pole vault at Thursday’s trials of the OIA track and field championships. Lum won the event by clearing 12 feet, 1 inch to easily break the mark of 11-2 set by Rachel Craft in 2013. The meet at Mililani narrowed the field for Saturday’s finals with the exception of girls pole vault and boys high jump. Baldwin’s Kainoa Tom set a Punahou Relays record in the pole vault by clearing 15 feet, 4 inches. The defending state champion credited coach Linden Wada, a 2001 and 2002 state champion, for his team’s performance. Sean Fukuhara placed second (14-0) and Jonathan You tied for fourth (13-6). Baldwin’s track and field team had a strong showing at Friday’s Honolulu Marathon Invitational. Bailey Kaopuiki won the boys 100 (10.97 seconds) and 200-meter dashes (22.10), and ran on the winning 4×100-meter relay team (43.13). Kiernan Leighton Mateo won the boys 300 hurdles (39.71) and Anthony Kahoohanohano-Davis won the long jump (22 feet, 0.75 inches). Kaitlin Smith won the girls long jump (16-9.50). Three records were broken at Saturday’s OIA West track and field championships at Mililani. Radford’s Izaiah Lavatai won the boys 400-meter run in a record time of 49.38 seconds. Miliani’s Aukahi Nolan cleared 14 feet, 4.50 inches to set a record in the boys pole vault. Mililani’s Vanessa Roybal set a new meet record in the girls 3,000 with a winning time of 10:54.76. Four records were broken at Saturday’s OIA Eastern Division track and field championships. Kaiser’s 4×100 relay team of Tommi Hintnaus, Kristen O’Handley, Celine Lum and Teuila Gardner set a record with a time of 50.77 seconds.
