Kaiser’s Tashiro, Kalaheo’s Torres win again

Kaiser’s Lisa Tashiro and Kalaheo’s Avery Torres remain undefeated. Tashiro won the girls race and Torres won the boys race at Saturday’s Pearl City cross country meet. They also won their respective races at the season-opening Michael Doran Invitational on Sept. 5. Tashiro, the defending state champion, finished the 3-mile course in 19 minutes, 15.48 seconds. Waiakea’s Ondo wins second race

Waiakea’s Louie Ondo won Saturday’s Kamehameha-Hawaii Invitational. Ondo has won both of his cross country races two weeks into the season. Ondo finished the boys 3-mile course at Kamehameha-Hawaii in 16 minutes, 46.07 seconds. Hilo’s River Brown was second in 16:58.24 and Konawaena’s Cody Ranfrnaz placed third in 17:00.18. Kaiser’s Tashiro wins season opener

Defending state cross country champion Lisa Tashiro of Kaiser won the season-opening Michael Doran Invitational on Saturday at Kalani. Tashiro finished the girls 3-mile race in 20 minutes, 31.54 seconds. Cassandra Frenzel of Kalaheo was second in 21:43.05 and teammate Emily McLemore was third in 21:54.90. Lia Galdeira skips senior year to turn pro

Former state basketball player of the year Lia Galdeira will forego her senior season at Washington State and turn pro. Galdeira, who prepped at Konawaena, will begin her professional basketball career in Europe this fall with hopes of playing in the WNBA. The entries list for this week’s Island Movers/HHSAA Track and Field Championships has been released. Trials begin on Friday at War Memorial Stadium on Maui and finals are Saturday. Two events — boys high jump and girls pole vault — will have their finals on Friday. Both of those events could heavily factor into team scoring for state titles. Punahou and Moanalua moved on to state volleyball’s final four in the Oahu regionals last night. Moanalua beat Kamehameha in five and Punahou put away Waianae in three. Kills from Karson Cruz and Skyler Engleman extended Moanalua’s lead to 11-7 in Set 5. Engleman’s kill and a Kamehameha hitting error made it 13-9, forcing the Warriors to call a timeout.
