VIDEO: Kahuku nearly upsets national power Saint Frances

By Paul Honda on October 3, 2022

Defending Hawaii Open Division state champion Kahuku had big-time powerhouse Saint Frances (Baltimore, Md.) on the ropes, but the nation’s No. 3-ranked program rallied for a 22-15 win at Carleton E. Weimer Field. The Panthers’ 6-5, 245-pound defensive end, Da’Shawn Womack, turned the tide with a 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown. That helped overcome a tremendous defensive effort by Kahuku, which came up with three goal-line stands against one of the biggest offensive lines in the country.

VIDEO: No. 2 Punahou over No. 5 Saint Louis, 43-19

By Paul Honda on September 23, 2022

Saint Louis had the ball, trailing 14-12, late in the first half, but back-to-back turnovers triggered a run by Punahou, which ran away with a 43-19 victory at Skippa Diaz Stadium. Efficiency was peak-level for quarterback John-Keawe Sagapolutele, who passed for 237 yards and three touchdowns on 17-for-22 marksmanship. Running back Ala‘i Williams added 132 yards and one TD on 17 carries in No. 2 Punahou’s 43-19 win over No. 5 Saint Louis

VIDEO: OIA D-II co-leader Pearl City edges Kaiser, 27-21

By Paul Honda on September 17, 2022

For more than three quarters, Pearl City had control. Then, the Kaiser Cougars roared back, scoring two touchdowns in the final six minutes. Pearl City’s defensive stop on the final play of the game — on a potential touchdown reception by Donovan Reis (11 receptions, 171 yards, two TDs) preserved a 27-21 win at Kaiser Stadium. Pearl City (5-1 overall, 4-0 league) remained in first place in the OIA Division II standings, sharing the lead with Nanakuli. Kaiser dropped to […]

VIDEO: Kahuku’s muddy 16-6 win over Campbell

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2022

Sometimes, perfection is messy. A 30-minute downpour in normally sunny Ewa Beach set the tone for No. 1-ranked Kahuku’s 16-6 win over No. 4 Campbell. The slick, muddy field led to six Kahuku sacks — two by Leonard Ah You and two by Sione Pasi — as Campbell’s normally potent offense lost its traction. Running backs Va‘aimalae Fonoti and Clyde Taulapapa scored one touchdown each as Kahuku improved to 5-0 overall.

VIDEO: Huge comeback by Radford, but Roosevelt wins 31-24

By Paul Honda on September 12, 2022

It was another instant classic for prep football in the islands. Radford trailed Roosevelt 23-0 at the half, rallied to take a 24-23 lead in the final 3 minutes, but the Rough Riders got a big kickoff return by Keanu Bezares to set up a game-winning 15-yard touchdown run by Silas Kekahuna with 2:27 to go. From there, Roosevelt’s special teams and defense stifled the gritty Rams. A sack by linebacker/wide receiver Kamu Kaaihue helped Roosevelt even their record at […]

VIDEO: No. 1 Kahuku rallies for 27-20 win over No. 3 Punahou

By Paul Honda on September 5, 2022

In my gut, this felt like a 9-3 kind of game. Two great defenses. Two teams with power and speed on the ground. Why not 9-3? But the second half of Kahuku and Punahou was an entirely different tone. Kahuku trailed 20-13 before rallying for a 27-20 win in one of the most exhilarating matchups ever between the two programs. Punahou nearly came, saw and conquered on Kahuku’s home turf. Reserve quarterback Ty McCutcheon was able to connect with speedy […]
