By Paul Honda on February 21, 2024

Quarterfinal and semifinal rounds always have that certain intrigue. Does Kalaheo continue its late-season run? Can Kahuku, the OIA’s fifth-place team, knock out OIA champion Leilehua? Does BIIF champion Kamehameha-Hawaii have the firepower to beat Punahou? Division II is equally unpredictable. With Trey Ambrozich out of the state tournament due to a back injury, can ILH champion University fulfill its potential? Kohala is the defending state champion, but will we see early-season Kohala or Kohala v2.0? Thursday, Feb. 22 HHSAA […]

By Paul Honda on February 20, 2024

From near and far, many of Hawaii’s finest girls basketball players arrived at lower gym of ‘Iolani School on Monday morning. When the day was done at the Mufi Hannemann Jamboree, Lahainaluna senior Lola Donez was a 3-point champion and a key contributor for tournament team champion Team Red. The 3-point contest had a head-to-head format that whittled down a dozen or so shooters. In a one-minute time frame, the gunners went to each of five spots to score. After […]

By Paul Honda on February 20, 2024

And then there were eight. The Division bracket of the Heide & Cook/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships took intrigue up a notch on Monday. Kalaheo is living by the simple truth that iron sharpens iron, ousting Mililani on Monday. The Mustangs’ 51-48 win on the Trojans’ homecourt was another case of an OIA 6 knocking out an OIA 2. It happened last year when Mililani lost to Moanalua. Here’s the recent history of OIA 2 vs. OIA 6 in the […]

Hoopbook: Donez, Huihui, Samura and memorable moments at states

By Paul Honda on February 8, 2024

This Hoopbook is long overdue and it took a state-tournament record night by Lola Donez to trigger it. Donez was in sniper mode, but ordinary sniper, during a 41-point performance on Wednesday night. Green light, tough off the dribble with the mid-range J from anywhere, and especially strong going to her left — the mark of a true workaholic hoopster. Lahainaluna needed all of it in a 69-66 win over a talented Waiakea squad. As a combo guard in a […]

By Paul Honda on January 31, 2024

Kamehameha-Hawaii just wrote a new page in the history book. UH-Hilo signee Keanu Huihui scored 20 points and volleyball-basketball standout Maela Honma added 16 as KS-Hawaii edged No. 5 Waiakea, 48-47, on Thursday to complete regular-season play unbeaten in the BIIF for the first time. “I’m still in shock. Last year, a goal of mine was to better myself as a player and leader, but this year I have more of a team goal. Our team has so much hustle […]

Julissa Bollinger, Jirah Villanueva spark Radford over Mililani, 56-45

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2023

She’s crafty, this lefty playmaker. Julissa Bollinger did a little of everything for Radford, including scoring on the block with a quick lefty jump hook off the glass over and over. Mililani had no solution for Bollinger and fellow senior Jirah Villanueva as Radford pulled away for a 56-45 win on Friday night at James Alegre Gymnasium. Bollinger finished with 22 points and Villanueva had 16 for Radford (5-1, 1-0 OIA West). “Definitely, Coach Dubz (assistant Allen Fortson) helped me […]
