By Paul Honda on April 16, 2022

Julian Samia’s father, Junior, is a fan of the movie, “Big Daddy.” It is the source of Samia’s first name. “I’m named after a character in the movie,” said Samia, whose younger brother, Benjamin (7), and Maya (2), have no film associations. By Paul Honda on April 14, 2022

One reason the ILH has three state-tournament berths in baseball is that there are seven varsity programs. Pac-Five and Maryknoll are part of the tribe. Damien plays the regular season with the ILH D-I teams, then ventures into D-II for the postseason. Maryknoll is surviving and even thriving in the state’s toughest high school baseball league. Coach Alaka‘i Aglipay has overseen the transformation since taking over for Eric Kadooka. The keys are many, but the biggest is always pitching. Parker […]

Fun in every run: Mid-Pacific’s spirited senior, Parker Wagnild

By Paul Honda on April 12, 2022

For a high schooler who once ran marathons during his elementary school years, track and field races are a blip. Parker Wagnild gave up marathons years ago and now is one of the state’s premier runners in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs. The Mid-Pacific senior also added the 800 to his menu, setting a state-best time of 2 minutes, 1.25 seconds last Friday at Punahou. The plan, generally, is for Wagnild to focus on the 1,500 and 3,000 at the […]

By Paul Honda on April 12, 2022

Lexie Tilton provided the cure — and the clout — for No. 1 ‘Iolani. The senior was bumped higher from the ninth position the batting order to leadoff as the Raiders tried to end a two-game skid last week. All Tilton did was belt a grand slam in a 12-1 win over Punahou on Friday, and then she delivered a walk-off two-run homer against Kamehameha in ‘Iolani’s miraculous 4-2 comeback win. Coaches and media rewarded the Raiders with eight of […]

Steal home, get the save: A good day for Maryknoll and OF/P Matt Miura

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2022

In case you missed it, Matt Miura had quite the afternoon at Waipio on Thursday. The speedy Maryknoll center fielder didn’t even have a base hit while enjoying, perhaps, the most actively fun game for any baseball player this season. In the third inning, Miura inched his way to a sizable lead off third base and stole home off Kamehameha’s talented southpaw pitcher, Kaena Kiakona. An acrobatic attempt by catcher Beau Sylvester to snag the high, outside heater and apply […]

By Paul Honda on April 5, 2022

The musical chairs never end. This time, it is Saint Louis that has climbed back into the No. 1 ranking of the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. The Crusaders (17-1-1, 9-1-1 ILH) battled through the ILH gauntlet and escaped unscathed with a 2-0 win over ‘Iolani, a 2-0 win over previous No. 1 Kamehameha and a key 6-0 win over Maryknoll last week. Baldwin swept Kamehameha-Maui in a three-game series at Iron Maehara Stadium and vaulted over Kamehameha to land at […]
